Real Madrid vs Málaga: Mbappé and Mourinho Ready for 2026 Clash

The Estadio Santiago Bernabéu is about to rewind the clock. For the first time since 2018, Málaga CF return to face Real Madrid, and they walk into a very different arena: Kylian Mbappé leading the line, José Mourinho on the touchline, and a home side already smelling blood in this LaLiga 2026-27 campaign.

Matchweek 3 brings a clash that, on paper, looks lopsided. On the pitch, Madrid are purring.

Mourinho’s team have opened the season with intent. A 2-1 win over Espanyol to clear the early cobwebs, followed by a ruthless 4-1 dismantling of Real Sociedad that felt like a statement. Six points from six, nine goals scored, and an attacking structure that is starting to click around its superstar core.

The one blot: no clean sheets.

Ibrahima Konaté has struggled to impose himself in these first two league outings, looking short of his usual authority. That vulnerability has been partly masked by the solid work of Dean Huijsen, Denzel Dumfries and Álvaro Carreras, who have all impressed in their roles and given Mourinho a platform to build from. But the defensive line still feels like the one area where Madrid are leaving the door slightly ajar.

Higher up the pitch, the mood is very different.

Bernardo Silva finally produced the performance Madrid fans had been waiting for against Real Sociedad. This was the version of Bernardo that dominated midfields in England and Europe: sharp on the half-turn, dictating tempo, stitching attacks together. It was his clearest show of control since arriving in Spain, and it changed the rhythm of Madrid’s play.

Alongside him, captain Federico Valverde continues to drive the midfield with his usual intensity, while Arda Güler offers guile and imagination between the lines. The spine looks strong, purposeful, and increasingly in sync.

And then there is Mbappé.

Mbappé fit, firing and expected to start

Any doubt about his involvement against Málaga can be parked. The 27-year-old French forward is fully fit and training with the first team. All signs point to him being involved, and given his current form, it would be a surprise if he is not central to Mourinho’s plan.

His last league outing was devastating. A hat-trick, constant movement, relentless pressure on the opposition back line. Real Sociedad simply could not live with him. Every run threatened chaos, every touch carried danger.

Crucially for Madrid, the chemistry that once looked like a puzzle is beginning to resemble a plan. Jude Bellingham, Vinícius Júnior and Kylian Mbappé are starting to find each other’s rhythms under Mourinho. The Englishman’s late surges, Vinícius’ direct dribbling, Mbappé’s explosive finishing – these are the weapons that could define Madrid’s season.

If those three keep growing together, the rest of LaLiga will feel it.

Madrid chase third straight win, Málaga search for first

Real Madrid now go hunting for their third consecutive league victory. Confidence is high, the Bernabéu is expectant, and the fixture list has handed them a familiar name that has not shared a pitch with them since 2018.

For Málaga, the picture is far more complicated. Los Blanquiazules are still waiting for their first win of the new season. The trip to Madrid, into one of the most intimidating stadiums in Europe, only cranks up the difficulty. They arrive as underdogs, and they know it.

Quality and depth lean heavily in Madrid’s favour. Mourinho has options everywhere, from defence through midfield to a star-studded attack. On current form, Los Blancos are strong favourites to extend their perfect start and keep the pressure on the rest of the league.

Málaga, though, have one card left to play: the unpredictability of a side with nothing to lose. Against a Madrid team chasing perfection, will that be anywhere near enough?
