Real Madrid Considers Aurelien Tchouameni Sale to Manchester United

Manchester United’s search for a specialist holding midfielder has led them back to a familiar marketplace – and a familiar club. This time, the name at the top of the list is Aurelien Tchouameni, and Real Madrid are ready to listen.

United have made a firm enquiry for the France international, with sources in Madrid describing their interest as “strong” now that his World Cup campaign is over. The 24-year-old – not 26, as some early reports suggested – is under contract at the Bernabeu until 2028, but that deal is no longer the deterrent it once looked.

Madrid’s midfield reshuffle

Real Madrid had been expected to lock Tchouameni down with an extension, and there were claims earlier in the summer that an agreement was already in place. No announcement followed. No signature, at least publicly, has appeared.

Instead, the European champions have been busy reshaping their midfield. Bernardo Silva has arrived from Manchester City after operating in a deeper role last season, while Eduardo Camavinga and Federico Valverde remain central pillars of the next Madrid generation. Both of their contracts run a year beyond Tchouameni’s.

The message from inside the club is clear: for the right fee, they will cash in.

It marks a notable shift from new coach Jose Mourinho’s original plan. Mourinho had intended to keep Tchouameni as part of his core midfield unit, but the combination of squad depth, contract dynamics and potential market value has changed the equation. Madrid are also being linked with Spain star Rodri, named the best player at the World Cup and out of contract at Manchester City next year, with a move this summer already being discussed.

If Rodri becomes a serious option, Tchouameni’s position starts to look even more precarious.

United’s No 6 problem

At Old Trafford, the need is obvious. United have already moved to bolster their midfield with Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, but neither is a pure No 6. Neither offers the blend of defensive instincts, physical presence and top-level experience that United have lacked in the role since Casemiro’s decline.

Tchouameni ticks every box the recruitment department has been trying to hit. He is in the club’s preferred age band of 22-26. He has started a World Cup final for France. He has already lifted the Champions League with Real Madrid. And crucially, he is available.

United’s interest is not new. He was shortlisted as a potential target earlier this year and was on the radar even before he joined Madrid. Back in 2021, when he was still at Monaco, United were offered the chance to sign him but had not budgeted for a major midfield addition. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, then in charge, wanted a midfielder and pushed for Declan Rice. The opportunity slipped away.

Madrid stepped in a year later, paying an initial €80m, rising to €100m, to prise Tchouameni from Monaco in 2022. He arrived as the long-term successor to Casemiro, who had just left for United in a £70m deal amid another midfield crisis at Old Trafford, days after a 4-0 humiliation at Brentford.

Two years on, United are back at Madrid’s door, this time for the Brazilian’s heir.

Lessons from Madrid – good and bad

United’s recent history with Real Madrid signings is complicated. Casemiro delivered in bursts, impressing in his first and final seasons and providing leadership in key spells. Yet he also anchored two of the worst United sides in 34 and 51 years before his release last month.

Raphael Varane, signed at 28 in 2021, brought pedigree and big-game performances, starting in League Cup and FA Cup final victories. Injuries, though, repeatedly stalled his momentum, and he too has now departed.

Angel Di Maria, a British-record £59.7m signing in 2014, remains the cautionary tale. Brilliant in flashes, gone within a year, and loudly booed on his return to Old Trafford with Paris Saint-Germain in 2019. Talent alone has never guaranteed a smooth transition from the Bernabeu to Manchester.

Tchouameni, though, sits in a different bracket. Younger than Casemiro was on arrival, less injury-prone than Varane, and far more settled in the role United are desperate to fill. He is not a luxury signing. He is the structural piece they have lacked.

A pivotal decision for all three parties

For Madrid, this is a question of timing and value. They paid a premium to secure Tchouameni and will not sell cheaply. With Rodri on the horizon and a packed midfield department, they must decide whether now is the moment to bank a significant fee and reinvest.

For United, it is a test of conviction. They passed on Tchouameni once. They overspent on an older solution in Casemiro. Now, with a younger, elite defensive midfielder on the market, the club has to decide whether it truly believes in the long-term rebuild it keeps talking about.

And for Tchouameni, there is a career-defining choice looming. Stay and fight for his place in a crowded Madrid engine room, or step into a starring role at a club still trying to claw its way back to the top.

The last time Real Madrid sold their defensive midfield anchor to Manchester United, it changed the trajectory of both clubs. If they do it again with Tchouameni, the impact could be even greater – and this time, United cannot claim they were not warned.
