Kylian Mbappé Signs Landmark Deal with On Holding

Kylian Mbappé has drawn a bold line under nearly 20 years with Nike, walking away from the American giant to sign a landmark deal with Swiss brand On Holding as it steps into professional football.

The Real Madrid forward had worn the Swoosh since he was eight. He grew from academy prodigy to global superstar with Nike on his feet, eventually standing alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Vinícius Jr as one of the company’s most powerful faces and the leading figure for its Mercurial boots.

That era is over.

Mbappé’s contract with Nike expired on July 31, and uncertainty lingered. He still appeared in Nike campaigns, his image remained splashed across the brand’s channels, and no announcement came. The partnership looked alive, even as the clock quietly ran out.

Now the French captain has confirmed the break — and the next step.

A running brand steps onto football’s biggest stage

On Holding, best known for its running shoes, has been steadily edging into elite sport. The company made its first major move in 2019, when Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer joined as an investor and strategic partner. His arrival helped push the brand from niche favourite to mainstream contender.

Football is the next frontier, and Mbappé is the statement signing.

“From the beginning, what drew me to On was the opportunity to build something entirely new together that will help shape tomorrow's game,” Mbappé said in the official announcement. “I want to bring my experience and perspective into what we create, push what's possible through innovation, and always stay true to the joy of football. We have a shared dream, and this is only the beginning.”

The message is clear: this is not just a logo swap. It is a collaboration.

Following Federer’s playbook

There is a striking precedent. Federer also walked away from a long, lucrative relationship with Nike to work with On. He went beyond a standard endorsement, becoming a shareholder and fronting his own signature line.

Mbappé’s move carries the same blueprint into football. The deal positions him not simply as a sponsored athlete but as a driving force in the design and development of On’s first full football range.

For Nike, the split closes a defining chapter. The company backed Mbappé from his earliest academy days, through his breakout at Monaco, his superstardom at Paris Saint-Germain and his arrival at Real Madrid. Along the way he received his own exclusive boots, the kind of treatment reserved for the elite tier occupied by Ronaldo and a select few others.

Now, after almost two decades, that relationship is finished.

It leaves Nike without one of its most marketable modern icons and hands On a generational talent just as it steps into the world’s biggest sport. The next time Mbappé laces up, he will not just be wearing a new brand.

He will be helping to build it.
