Ramsay's Liverpool Exit: Loan Move to St Mirren

Ramsay’s Liverpool chapter looks all but closed after the club sanctioned another loan move, this time to St Mirren, with his Anfield contract running down and opportunities under Arne Slot having dried up.

The 23-year-old has been unable to nail down any kind of regular role on Merseyside, and his deal expires next summer. That combination makes this latest switch feel less like a development step and more like a soft goodbye. Unless Ramsay delivers a genuinely outstanding spell back in Scotland, there’s little indication Liverpool will sit back down at the table to discuss an extension.

The flip side is obvious. If he thrives in Paisley, enjoys the rhythm of playing every week and reconnects with his best form, a permanent move to Craig McLeish’s side could quickly become the most logical outcome for everyone involved.

His slide down the pecking order has been stark. Even when Liverpool were stretched at right-back last season, Ramsay remained on the fringes. With Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley both sidelined for long spells, Slot repeatedly improvised rather than turn to the specialist full-back, using midfielders like Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones on the right of defence.

That told its own story. Bradley, the Northern Ireland captain, is still months away from returning from injury, and the Dutchman’s own display at Newcastle on Sunday drew heavy criticism. Yet Liverpool still felt comfortable letting Ramsay leave on loan, despite Andoni Iraola’s issues in that position and the lack of convincing cover.

Strip away the sentiment and the conclusion is blunt: Ramsay has almost certainly played his last game for Liverpool. Four years on from his move from Aberdeen, the career path he imagined at Anfield has never really materialised.

It is a disappointment for player and club, but the chance in Paisley offers something more valuable than nostalgia – a clean slate, a jersey to fight for and a platform to prove he belongs at this level. What he does with it now will shape the next phase of his career far more than anything that happened at Anfield.
