Premier League Matchweek 1: Team News and Injury Updates

The new Premier League season opens with a familiar scramble: managers hiding their line‑ups, medical rooms full, Fantasy teams in bits, and the first deadline looming at 18:30 BST.

Matchweek 1 Preview

Arsenal v Coventry: Big guns back, big doubt in midfield

Arsenal start with a question that will nag right up to kick-off: does Bruno Guimaraes make it?

The new signing is a “major doubt”, but Mikel Arteta refuses to rule him out. He’ll push the decision as late as possible, encouraged by how quickly the Brazilian is progressing. If Guimaraes doesn’t start, Arsenal’s midfield balance shifts immediately.

The good news for the Emirates crowd is clearer. Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice are “ready to be involved” again after beginning on the bench in last weekend’s Community Shield win over Manchester City. Both should come straight back into the XI, restoring the familiar spine Arteta trusts in big games.

At the back, Jurrien Timber is still “a few weeks” away, while William Saliba remains a long-term absentee, so the defensive core will look much as it did at Wembley.

Coventry arrive without their main source of goals. Haji Wright, last season’s top scorer, is out for up to 12 weeks with a serious quad injury. Frank Lampard called it “disappointing for Haji and for us”, and it leaves a glaring hole up front. Ellis Simms is expected to step in as the central striker.

There is at least some relief for Lampard. Ephron Mason-Clark and Jack Rudoni have shaken off pre-season knocks and are in contention, though both are likely to be eased back from the bench rather than thrown straight in. Frank Onyeka faces a late fitness test, another decision that could tweak Coventry’s midfield shape.

Hull v Manchester United: Makeshift Hull defence, United juggling options

Hull’s return to the top flight comes with a brutal injury list. Six first‑team players, including Jack Butland and Darko Gyabi, are out until at least next month. Joe Gelhardt’s absence removes a key attacking outlet.

Hidemasa Morita and Cody Drameh are only due back in training after this match, while Charlie Hughes’ injury leaves a sizeable gap at the heart of defence. New signing Nobel Mendy is poised to fill it, likely anchoring a tight five-at-the-back system that powered Hull through the playoffs. Survival instincts will kick in early.

Manchester United arrive with momentum from a strong pre-season but a few headaches of their own. Mason Mount is “touch and go for the weekend”, though Michael Carrick insists “there are no dramas” and expects the midfielder back soon. His absence, even short term, forces a rethink in United’s pressing and build-up.

Matthijs De Ligt is back in training but not yet ready to feature. Benjamin Sesko has also rejoined the group, yet this opener is likely too soon for him to start, leaving Carrick with decisions to make over his centre-forward and the structure around him.

Everton v Crystal Palace: Waiting on Dyche, watching Henderson

Everton’s team news is being kept under wraps, with updates to follow, leaving Fantasy managers guessing over Sean Dyche’s first selection of the campaign.

Crystal Palace have a clearer picture, but one crucial variable. The club are hopeful Dean Henderson will be fit despite the ankle twist he suffered in the final pre-season friendly against Freiburg. New manager Pierre Sage wants him in goal and has given the keeper several days of treatment to get him there.

The rest of the squad is available. Jean-Philippe Mateta is back in the matchday group after his own fitness issues and, while unlikely to start, should see some minutes as he builds sharpness.

Ipswich v Sunderland: Clean bill for Sunderland, decisions everywhere

Ipswich are yet to reveal their team news, holding their cards close before their Premier League return.

Sunderland, by contrast, have almost everyone available. Only Simon Adingra misses out, still not fully recovered from an ankle problem. Regis Le Bris must now decide who actually starts, with many of his players at different stages of readiness.

“We’ll see for the game time because they are not all at the same stage, but they are available,” he said. Thomas Meunier, who had been struggling with back pain, trained this week and will be in the squad, with the right-back likely to get some minutes. Omar Alderete and Nordi Mukiele also return from injuries, boosting Sunderland’s defensive options.

Nottingham Forest v Leeds: Forest lose their captain, Leeds weigh a gamble

Nottingham Forest begin without their captain. Ryan Yates, who missed the final pre-season friendly against Stade Brestois, has not recovered in time. Nicolo Savona is also out after a minor setback in his recovery from knee surgery.

“We had to take a step back, so he’s working in the gym again and working on his knee to get back on the grass. I think it will take a couple of weeks,” Oliver Glasner explained. Beyond those two, Forest have a full squad available.

Leeds face a delicate call over Noah Okafor. The forward, who finished last season with six goals in his final 10 games, has been back in full training for two weeks. Daniel Farke, though, is reluctant to rush him, stressing that it’s his responsibility to decide whether the risk is worth it. Late decisions are expected.

Willy Gnonto is out with a hamstring injury, though Leeds hope to have him back in team training soon. Gabriel Gudmundsson is also “still out”. Everyone else is fit and ready, giving Farke a stable core with one or two big selection swings.

Brentford v Spurs: Defensive reshuffle for De Zerbi

Bournemouth’s team news is still to be confirmed, but the spotlight here falls squarely on Spurs and a defence that has been ripped up before a ball is kicked.

New club captain Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro are both ruled out. Two pillars of Roberto De Zerbi’s back line gone in one hit. Archie Gray is expected to cover at right-back, while summer signing Marcos Senesi, brought in from Bournemouth, could start at centre-back.

Pape Matar Sarr is another absentee, not fit enough to play. At least De Zerbi has his attacking core intact: James Maddison, Dominic Solanke, Mateus Fernandes and Destiny Udogie are all available and should carry the threat.

Brighton v Aston Villa: Hurzeler juggling injuries, Villa wait

Fabian Hurzeler’s first league line-up as Brighton manager will be shaped by the treatment room. Yankuba Minteh is out for at least a couple of weeks, and three more key names – Carlos Baleba, Kaoru Mitoma and Stefanos Tzimas – are doubts and will be assessed close to Sunday.

New signing Promise David could be involved, but likely from the bench as Hurzeler manages his integration and the physical demands of the league.

Aston Villa’s team news is still to come, leaving their exact shape at the Amex unclear.

Manchester City v Bournemouth: Rose hit by injuries before first whistle

Manchester City have yet to reveal their opening‑day squad, but Bournemouth’s situation is already complicated for Marco Rose’s first official match in charge.

Last season’s breakout star Junior Kroupi is out until around November after foot surgery, stripping Bournemouth of one of their most dynamic attackers. Tyler Adams is being assessed and remains in contention, though not certain, while Ryan Christie is suspended, opening a possible vacancy in central midfield.

David Brooks is also being monitored, giving Rose a series of early tests as he tries to stamp his identity on the side against the champions.

Newcastle v Liverpool: New faces for Jaissle, Liverpool keep cards close

Newcastle’s midfield will look different without Joelinton. Matthias Jaissle confirmed the Brazilian is out “for a couple of weeks” and will miss the opening weekend, though he expects him back soon.

Summer signing Aladji Bamba is set to come into central midfield, while new right-back Amar Dedic could be thrown straight into the starting XI after getting minutes in friendlies. “I am confident that he's ready and we need him,” Jaissle said.

Tino Livramento is edging closer but has only taken part in one training session, so still needs more time.

Liverpool’s team news is yet to be confirmed, leaving their exact set-up at St James’ Park as one of the weekend’s big unknowns.

Fulham v Chelsea: Arbeloa’s first call, Alonso’s new-look attack

Fulham will be without Joachim Anderson, suspended for the start of the season, and Tom Cairney, who is out until October following knee surgery earlier this month. That immediately strips Alvaro Arbeloa of experience at both ends for his first match in charge.

Expect new signing Gonzalo Garcia, recruited from Real Madrid in the summer, to start up front. All eyes will be on how quickly he adapts to the Premier League’s pace and physicality.

Chelsea arrive with a refreshed attack and a few fitness caveats. Danny Welbeck, signed from Brighton, is managing his workload in training but could still feature, most likely from the bench. Xabi Alonso expects him back with the group on Saturday and is taking it “day by day”.

Jordan Henderson is out until September with a wrist injury. Players who went deep into the World Cup “may need a bit more time”, Alonso admitted, though none are injured and all are available for selection.

Matchweek 1 hasn’t even kicked off, and already the season hinges on late tests, calculated gambles and new signings thrown in at the deep end. The line-ups will tell their own stories – and for managers and Fantasy players alike, those first choices could define the months ahead.
