Portsmouth Sign Chelsea Winger Ryan Kavuma-McQueen on Loan

Portsmouth have moved to bolster their wide options with the season-long loan signing of highly rated Chelsea winger Ryan Kavuma-McQueen.

The 17-year-old, one of the latest prospects off Chelsea’s academy production line, already has a senior appearance to his name, coming off the bench in a 7-0 FA Cup win over Port Vale. In January he signed his first professional contract with the west London club, a clear marker of how they view his potential.

Chelsea have been edging him closer to the top level. Last season Kavuma-McQueen was named on the bench for Champions League ties against Paris St-Germain and Ajax, and he also made the match-day squad for Premier League fixtures with Liverpool and Tottenham as he hovered on the fringes of Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

At academy level he has climbed each rung, featuring regularly for Chelsea’s Under-18s before stepping into the U21s last term. Comfortable on either flank, he brings pace and direct running to the touchline – exactly what Portsmouth manager John Mousinho has been hunting for.

“We’ve been in the market for wingers for quite a while and Ryan ticks all the boxes of the profile of player that we want to bring in,” Mousinho told BBC Radio Solent. “He’s quick, direct, can play off both sides and he’s only 17 so that probably tells you how highly we rate him and how highly Chelsea rate him.

“He was away with the first team this pre-season and played minutes out on their tour, so he’s a very exciting prospect. We’ve tracked him throughout his youth career and he made the step up last year into the 21s side so we’re really excited to get him through the door.

“I think he’s going to fit the way that we want to play really well and we’re really pleased to get this one done.”

Kavuma-McQueen will drop into a competitive group of wide players at Fratton Park. He joins Abu Kamara, Josh Murphy, Harvey Blair, Eoin Kenny and Luke Brooke-Smith in the battle for places on the flanks, adding another sharp, unpredictable option to Mousinho’s attacking mix.

For Portsmouth, it is another calculated move into the loan market. For Kavuma-McQueen, it is the first real test of whether all those academy steps can now translate into senior impact.
