Police Investigate Incident Involving Cardiff City Defender at Portsmouth Match

Police have launched an investigation after a flashpoint between Cardiff City defender Krystian Bielik and home supporters marred Portsmouth’s 2-0 Championship win at Fratton Park on Saturday.

The incident unfolded late in the second half as Bielik went to collect the ball from the crowd. What should have been a routine restart turned ugly. Cardiff head coach Brian Barry-Murphy said afterwards that his player “got slapped in the face”, while footage shared on social media appeared to show the Poland international grabbing a young fan around the upper body.

From the stands, several Portsmouth supporters reacted immediately, making gestures suggesting they believed the teenager had been grabbed by the throat. Tension crackled around that corner of the ground.

Hampshire Police later confirmed they are treating the matter as an alleged assault.

“We can confirm that we are investigating an incident in which a teenage boy was reportedly the victim of a common assault during the football match at Fratton Park. Our enquiries are ongoing,” a statement read.

The flashpoint did not end there. In the aftermath, another home fan threw a ball at the head of Cardiff defender Perry Ng. Both supporters involved were ejected from the stadium.

Portsmouth head coach John Mousinho apologised to Cardiff’s players after the final whistle, with the club moving quickly to acknowledge the seriousness of the situation.

In a statement, Pompey said: “Portsmouth Football Club are aware of supporter concerns regarding the incident involving a young fan and an opposition player at yesterday's match at Fratton Park.

“As this remains a safeguarding matter and is currently under investigation by both the club and the police, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further on the circumstances at this time.

“However, we are aware that a number of claims and assertions are circulating on social media. We would urge caution against speculation while enquiries are ongoing.

“The welfare and safeguarding of young people are of paramount importance to Portsmouth Football Club. We will continue to liaise with the relevant parties as enquiries progress.

“No further comment will be made at this stage while investigations remain ongoing.”

The Football Association has been made aware of the incident and will study the referee’s report before deciding whether any disciplinary action is required.

Cardiff City, for their part, backed the handling of the situation by the match officials on the day.

“We are satisfied with the way that match officials dealt with the situation during the game, having been in full view of it. Player protection will always be of paramount importance to us,” the club said.

A routine ball retrieval, a flare-up in the stands, and now a police investigation: as the Championship season gathers pace, the fallout from Fratton Park will not be settled on the pitch.
