Patrick Maswanganyi Set for Move to Asia After Pirates Success

Orlando Pirates star Patrick “Tito” Maswanganyi is on the brink of a move to Asia, with the Soweto giants understood to have all but wrapped up talks with an unnamed AFC club for the 28-year-old’s next step after three standout seasons in black and white.

The first real sign something was up came in Polokwane. Maswanganyi was nowhere to be seen at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium as Pirates edged Sekhukhune United’s Babina Noko 1–0 in the first leg of their semifinal, veteran Deon Hotto delivering the only goal.

Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou was clear afterwards: Maswanganyi was not injured.

That revelation flipped the narrative. This wasn’t rotation. It was a signal.

Pirates had plucked ‘Tito’ from SuperSport United in 2023, and he wasted no time turning himself into a fan favourite. He drove their attack, knitted moves together, and last season played a central role in ending a 12-year wait for the league title, prising the crown away from serial champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

Given that resurgence, it looked like Pirates had drawn a line under major exits after sanctioning the high-profile sale of talisman Relebohile Mofokeng. The reigning Footballer of the Year left for Belgian topflight side Union Saint-Gilloise shortly after the FIFA World Cup, a move that already felt like a significant reshaping of the squad.

Then came another twist.

The Buccaneers confirmed right-back Deano van Rooyen’s departure after two years at the club. Now Maswanganyi, who had featured in every fixture leading up to the trip to Polokwane, appears set to follow him out of the door.

For Maswanganyi, a move abroad will not be a step into the unknown. As a teenager he left the renowned Stars of Africa Academy for Portugal, spending several years there and learning the demands of the European game before returning home to build his name.

He also carries international pedigree. ‘Tito’ has four Bafana Bafana caps, though his national-team story has stalled of late. He missed out on selection for the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco at the start of the year and then the World Cup, slipping down the pecking order at precisely the time his club form was peaking.

Now, with Pirates reshaping and Asia calling, Maswanganyi stands on the edge of another career pivot. The question is no longer whether he is leaving – it’s how big a hole he will leave behind in a side that only just remembered how to be champions.
