Olwethu Makhanya Joins Rangers from Philadelphia Union

Philadelphia Union have sold one of their brightest defensive prospects, sending center back Olwethu Makhanya to Scottish giants Rangers FC in a deal reportedly worth up to $4.5 million.

For a club stuck in 14th place in the Eastern Conference at the halfway mark, it’s a transfer that lands a significant fee but also strips away a key piece of their back line.

From Stellenbosch to Scotland

Makhanya’s rise has been sharp. The 22-year-old arrived in Philadelphia in July 2023 from South African Premiership side Stellenbosch FC on a U22 Initiative deal, a signing that initially flew under the radar in MLS.

He didn’t stay anonymous for long.

Across all competitions, Makhanya made 53 appearances for the Union, scoring three goals and growing into a reliable presence in central defense. He was part of the side that lifted the 2025 Supporters’ Shield, a high point for a club that has prided itself on smart recruitment and steady development.

That growth was not lost on the Union hierarchy.

“We greatly appreciate Olwethu’s contributions in his three years with the Union,” said sporting director Jon Scheer. “He has grown tremendously since joining the club and proved himself to be impactful on our backline. We believe this is a great opportunity for Olwethu as he continues to develop, and we wish him all the best in this next chapter.”

The next chapter is a big one. Rangers, perennial contenders in the Scottish Premiership and regulars in European competition, offer a different kind of spotlight. Makhanya also arrives in Glasgow on the back of a major international milestone, having represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup this summer.

Union lose a pillar at a fragile moment

For Philadelphia, the timing is as intriguing as it is challenging.

At the midway point of the season, the Union sit 14th in the East with 13 points, well off the pace and outside the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs positions. The club has already undergone a significant change on the touchline, with interim coach Ryan Richter now tasked with steadying a campaign that has drifted.

Now he must do it without one of his starting center backs.

Makhanya’s departure forces a defensive reshuffle and tests the depth of a squad that has leaned heavily on its spine in recent years. The transfer fee offers flexibility and validates the club’s model of identifying and elevating young talent, but the short-term question is blunt: who fills the void?
