Newcastle's Full-Back Dilemma Ahead of Liverpool Opener
Newcastle United are running out of days and running short of full-backs.
With less than two weeks until Liverpool arrive to launch the Premier League campaign, Matthias Jaissle is trying to knit together a disrupted pre-season, bruised by injuries and shaped by transfer uncertainty. The training ground at The Knox has been busy; the treatment room even busier.
The left side brings cautious optimism. The right is a problem.
Hall back in the fold, but for how long?
Lewis Hall briefly set alarm bells ringing when he left Newcastle’s training camp in Spain in early August. That exit, though, was described as precautionary, and the picture has brightened since.
He has already featured in the friendly against Everton at Murrayfield, a key step after returning to work on Tyneside. The Athletic’s Chris Waugh reported that Hall was scheduled to resume training at The Knox and could be used in the final warm-up matches before the season begins, a plan that has now started to play out.
The big caveat? His future. Hall is expected to be available for Liverpool “if he remains a Magpie by then.” Newcastle want him fit and firing, but the lingering possibility of a move hangs over their left-back plans at the very moment Jaissle needs certainty.
Miley boost for midfield
There is better news in the middle of the pitch.
The Daily Mail’s Craig Hope and Simon Jones report that Newcastle expect Lewis Miley to be ready for the season opener after his recovery from a broken leg. For a squad that has already had its rhythm disturbed, getting a gifted young midfielder back in time for Liverpool is a significant lift.
Miley’s inclusion in the update underlines how carefully Newcastle have managed his return. The expectation is clear: he should be available when the Reds come to town.
Livramento ruled out of Liverpool clash
The clarity around Tino Livramento is far less welcome.
The 23-year-old right-back has not played since the calf injury that forced him out of England’s World Cup squad. That setback has dragged into the new season, and Newcastle will have to start without him.
“The England defender is currently in the United States as he continues his rehabilitation from the calf injury that ruled him out of the World Cup,” they wrote. “He could return on the second weekend of the campaign at Tottenham.”
If that timetable holds, Livramento misses Liverpool but could rejoin the squad in time for MD 2 in north London. That is encouragement for the medium term, but it does nothing to solve Jaissle’s immediate selection puzzle on the right flank.
Transfer pressure ramps up
Newcastle were already in the market for full-back reinforcements before these latest updates. Now the need is sharper.
With Livramento sidelined and Hall both managing fitness and sitting in the middle of transfer noise, the margins are thin. Jaissle looks set to go into the Liverpool game without his first-choice right-back, leaning on Hall to stay fit and bank enough pre-season minutes to hit the ground running.
The clock is ticking on two fronts: the season opener and the transfer window. Newcastle cannot slow either.
