Jose Mourinho's Message to Vinicius Jr: Stay at Real Madrid

Jose Mourinho has revealed the blunt message he delivered to Vinicius Jr as Real Madrid fought to keep their star winger out of the Premier League’s reach: leaving the Bernabeu, he told him, “was not worth it”.

Vinicius, 26, had entered the final year of his deal, a dangerous window for any elite club. With his contract ticking down, he would have been free to walk away next summer. Arsenal, fresh from a Premier League title and looking for another world-class wide threat, were among those closely watching the situation as talks dragged on.

The move never came. Earlier this month, Vinicius signed a new six-year contract, tying his prime years to Madrid. Mourinho, back at the club for a second spell as head coach after his return was confirmed in June, says he played his part in that decision.

“Vinicius has fallen in love with Real Madrid,” Mourinho told Spanish TV show El Chiringuito, before lifting the lid on the conversation that helped shape the Brazilian’s future.

“The only thing I told him was: ‘Vini, where do you want to go? You’ve only been in Brazil and you only know Real Madrid. You only understand Real Madrid when you leave. When you leave that’s when you realise what Real Madrid is. Don’t leave. It’s not worth it.’”

For Mourinho, it was not just about romance or nostalgia. He pointed to the direction of the team and the work on the training ground as key to convincing Vinicius that his ambitions would be met in Madrid.

“I think what he has felt in terms of the group’s growth, the way we’ve been working and developing, has given him a very important feeling,” he said.

Mourinho’s relationship with Vinicius has already been tested in uncomfortable circumstances. Last season, while in charge of Benfica, he faced Real Madrid three times in the Champions League. Their second meeting – the first leg of a knockout phase play-off – was overshadowed by allegations of abuse aimed at the Brazilian.

Real players claimed that Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni racially abused Vinicius, prompting the match to be halted for around eight minutes. Prestianni denied the allegations, and Mourinho publicly backed his player at the time.

Uefa later intervened. The governing body banned Prestianni for three matches, with a further three suspended, but for homophobic conduct, not racism.

Mourinho, reflecting on that night, drew a clear line between loyalty to his own dressing room and the broader support he now says Vinicius can expect from him in Madrid.

“Prestianni was my player. That’s it. There’s no debate. If Prestianni is my player, 20 players can come at me and I’m still with Prestianni. End of story,” he said.

Then came the pivot – from rival coach to club guardian.

“I think Vini now knows what side I am now on and knows he can look me in the eye and rely on me to be on his side.”

For Madrid, keeping Vinicius away from the lure of England and locked into a six-year deal is a statement. For Mourinho, it is also a starting point: a world-class winger, emotionally tied to the club, and a manager determined to convince him that there is nowhere better to spend the peak of his career.
