Moisés Caicedo's Injury Setback: Chelsea vs Arsenal

Moisés Caicedo was nowhere to be seen on Chelsea’s team sheet for their Premier League clash with Arsenal on Sunday, a significant setback for Xabi Alonso just as it looked like the midfielder had turned a corner in his recovery.

The Ecuador international had only just returned from injury, but his stop-start beginning to the season continued with his omission from the squad for the London showdown.

Stop-start return hits another snag

Caicedo’s absence will have raised eyebrows again among Chelsea supporters. He was already a surprise omission from the opening league game against Fulham, when Alonso revealed the 22-year-old had suffered what he called a “minor setback.”

That problem kept him out of the midweek Carabao Cup win over Luton Town. Chelsea then tried to ease him back in against Brighton last weekend. It lasted 14 minutes.

Brought on as a second-half substitute, Caicedo had to be withdrawn, prompting fresh concern. Alonso later admitted the issue against Brighton “wasn’t something new,” hinting at an ongoing problem the club has been trying to manage.

Alonso opts against late gamble

Even so, there was late hope he might feature against Arsenal. Alonso said the midfielder had pushed close to being available for the game at Stamford Bridge, only to fall just short.

“He was close. But there is no point in taking a risk at this moment. We need to be cautious,” Alonso told Sky Sports before kick-off.

So Chelsea went into a major early-season test without one of their key summer signings, choosing caution over a gamble that could have backfired badly in the long run.

The real question now: when Caicedo does return, will Chelsea finally get the sustained run from him that this midfield rebuild was built around?
