Milan Rejects Coventry's €10m Offer for Loftus-Cheek

Milan have knocked back a €10 million offer from Coventry City for Ruben Loftus-Cheek, making it clear they have no intention of letting the midfielder leave this summer, according to Tuttosport.

The newly promoted Premier League side had marked the 30-year-old out as a priority signing, hoping his experience and physical presence would anchor their return to the top flight. Their first move, though, hit a brick wall.

Milan’s answer was swift. And it was firm. No deal.

Amorim makes his stance clear

The refusal wasn’t just a boardroom decision. New Milan coach Ruben Amorim is understood to have played a decisive role in blocking any exit for the former Chelsea man.

Amorim plans to lean heavily on Loftus-Cheek across the entire 2026-27 campaign. He sees the Englishman as a key piece of his tactical puzzle at San Siro, particularly because of his ability to operate between the lines and slot into multiple roles within the system.

That versatility has effectively taken Loftus-Cheek off the market. Amorim, per the report, personally intervened to shut down the transfer, leaving Milan’s stance crystal clear: the midfielder is central to the new project and not for sale this summer.

Lampard reunion put on ice

Coventry’s bid also carried a strong narrative pull. Frank Lampard, now in charge of the Midlands club, had pushed to reunite with a player he knows well from their time together at Stamford Bridge.

Lampard was keen to bring Loftus-Cheek back to England as a statement signing for Coventry’s first season back in the Premier League. The move would have offered the midfielder a return to familiar surroundings and a leading role in a new-look side.

Instead, that reunion is on hold. Milan’s rejection has shut the door on Lampard’s plans, at least for now.

Established presence at San Siro

Loftus-Cheek is now preparing for his fourth straight season in Serie A. He joined Milan from Chelsea in the summer of 2023 in a permanent €19m deal and has since carved out a reputation as a reliable, physically dominant presence in the Rossoneri midfield.

His blend of power, ball-carrying and tactical flexibility has made him a trusted option through different phases of Milan’s recent evolution. Those qualities have only grown in value under a coach like Amorim, who leans heavily on adaptable midfielders to knit his structure together.

Contract clock still ticking

For all Milan’s firmness in the face of Coventry’s approach, there is a complication in the background. Loftus-Cheek’s contract at San Siro has less than a year to run.

That ticking clock changes the equation. Refusing €10m now sends a strong sporting message, but it also carries a risk: if no extension is agreed, Milan could see him walk away on a free transfer next summer.

The club’s hierarchy will soon have to make a call. Either open renewal talks to protect his value and lock him into Amorim’s long-term plans, or accept that this hard-line stance might lead to losing a key midfielder for nothing in a year’s time.
