Michael Owen on Haaland–Mbappé at Real Madrid: A Tactical Challenge

Erling Haaland’s name has hovered around Real Madrid for years, a kind of transfer ghost that never quite materialised. When he was tearing up defences for Borussia Dortmund, many in Spain were convinced the Bernabéu would be his next stop.

Madrid chose a different path. They pushed all their chips to the centre of the table for Kylian Mbappé. That decision still shapes everything.

Mbappé is in the building. Vinícius Júnior is already the face of the project. And trying to squeeze both into the same attacking framework has not been simple. The last two seasons have shown just how tricky that balance can be.

So when the idea of adding Haaland to that mix comes up, Michael Owen doesn’t see a fantasy superteam. He sees a tactical and financial minefield.

Speaking to Skinradar, with his comments carried by Defensa Central, the former Real Madrid forward was blunt: “As long as Mbappé is there, I don't see them spending that amount to sign Haaland. There are already those who wonder whether Vinícius and Mbappé can play together, because Mbappé likes to play a little to the left side, and there are already questions about that.”

The issue isn’t just money. It’s geometry. Space. Zones on the pitch.

“If the pairing is Mbappé and Haaland, then how will they play together?” Owen continued. “Will you make Mbappé play on the left side? I think it will be one or the other, honestly. I don't think you can have two of the best out-and-out strikers in the world, Mbappé and Haaland, in the same team. Personally, I don't think they can be part of the same squad.”

For Owen, this isn’t some radical new theory. It’s a lesson Madrid have already lived through.

He pointed straight back to the Galácticos era he experienced first-hand. Back then, the club stacked names, chased star power, and trusted that talent alone would sort out the rest. It didn’t always work.

“I mean, it's about the cost, then trying to make that work, and for that to happen, I think Mbappé would be forced to leave,” he said. “They tried the Galácticos idea many years ago, in my generation. Simply gathering the big players is not necessarily the perfect solution.”

The affection is still there. Owen made it clear he retains admiration and warmth for Real Madrid, a club that remains obsessed with the biggest names in world football.

But in his eyes, the equation is brutal. As long as Mbappé leads the line at the Bernabéu, the Haaland dream stays just that.
