Messi Shines in Inter Miami's 4-2 Victory Over Atletico San Luis

Lionel Messi did not ease his way back. He arrived at full speed.

On his first start for Inter Miami since returning from World Cup duty, the 37-year-old tore straight into the Leagues Cup, scoring twice and adding an assist in a breathless 4-2 win over Atletico de San Luis at Nu Stadium on Wednesday night.

Early shock, instant response

Miami’s evening began with a jolt. David Rodriguez silenced the home crowd with an early strike for the visitors, punishing a sluggish start and briefly threatening to turn the script on its head.

That lasted only moments.

Noah Allen burst down the left and whipped in a cross at pace. Messi, charging into the box, met it without breaking stride, lashing a full-speed volley past the keeper. One touch. Out of the air. Net.

Inter Miami head coach Guillermo Hoyos could barely hide his admiration.

"He struck the ball out of the air," Hoyos said, as quoted by ESPN. "Those of us who have played football know what it takes to find the time and space to connect, meeting a cross coming from left to right and hitting it cleanly on the volley with his left foot. If we were talking about painting, it would be Picasso."

The goal changed everything. The crowd rose, the tempo lifted, and Atletico San Luis suddenly found themselves chasing shadows.

Allen’s breakout, Messi’s record

With Miami now flowing, the pressure told again. Telasco Segovia finished off another sharp move to put the Herons in front, his strike capping a spell of controlled dominance.

Allen, already with one telling contribution, was beginning to own the left flank. His passing cut through Atletico San Luis repeatedly, and it was his vision again that unlocked the defence for Segovia.

Just before the interval, Messi struck once more. Allen picked him out and the Argentine did the rest, adding his second of the night and tightening Miami’s grip on the tie.

That goal carried extra weight. It moved Messi to 14 Leagues Cup goals, making him the competition’s all-time leading scorer and nudging him past LAFC forward Denis Bouanga. Another record, another line in a career already crammed with them.

For Allen, this was a landmark night of his own. Three assists, all in one match, for the first time in his career. Each of Miami’s first three goals had his fingerprints on it, his clever deliveries repeatedly putting teammates in positions they could not waste.

No Suarez, no problem

All of this came with a notable absentee. Luis Suarez, Miami’s other superstar forward, was nowhere near the pitch. He has begun serving a six-match suspension for spitting at a Seattle Sounders staff member during the 2025 Leagues Cup final, a ban that rules the Uruguayan out for the entirety of this year’s tournament.

On paper, that is a huge hole in Miami’s attack. On the grass, Messi made sure it did not feel that way.

His movement dragged defenders out of shape. His touch dictated the rhythm. His finishing, as ever, applied the punishment. With him back in the starting XI, Miami looked once again like a side built to dominate this competition.

Atletico San Luis kept swinging, finding a second goal to keep the scoreline honest, but they never quite managed to drag the game away from Messi’s orbit. Miami always seemed to have another gear, another pass, another run.

Eyes on Monterrey and another title charge

The 4-2 victory does more than send Inter Miami through another step in the Leagues Cup. It restores a familiar feeling: with Messi on the field, this team believes the trophy is theirs to lose.

They lifted the Leagues Cup in 2023. They now push on again, armed with the tournament’s all-time top scorer and a left-back in Allen playing the game of his life.

Suarez will still be watching from the stands. Messi will not.
