Matteo Guendouzi Faces Four-Match Suspension After Brawl

Fenerbahce midfielder Matteo Guendouzi has been hit with a four-match European suspension and a heavy fine after the ugly post-match brawl that followed the club’s Champions League play-off victory at Lyon.

Uefa announced that two of Guendouzi’s four games are suspended, leaving the Frenchman facing an immediate two-match ban in European competition. He was also fined 50,000 euros (£43,000) after being found guilty of “insulting others present at the match, provoking spectators and violating the basic rules of decent conduct”.

The flashpoints erupted after Fenerbahce’s win in France, a result that sealed a 3-2 aggregate success and a place in the league stage. Tempers, already frayed by the high-stakes tie and the hostile atmosphere, spilled over once the final whistle had gone.

Mason Greenwood, Fenerbahce’s English striker, was also sanctioned. He received a one-match suspended ban, which will only come into force if he reoffends during a one-year probationary period, and a 30,000 euro (£26,000) fine. Uefa cited him for “violating the basic rules of decent conduct”.

On the Lyon side, goalkeeping coach Antonio Ferreira received the harshest touchline punishment. He was handed a five-match ban, with two of those games suspended, after Uefa described his involvement as a “serious assault” during the clashes that followed the second leg.

The disciplinary panel did not stop at individuals. Both clubs were fined 50,000 euros for their teams “violating the general and basic rules of conduct”, underlining Uefa’s stance on control and responsibility in high-tension European nights.

Fenerbahce will now have to navigate the early part of their European campaign knowing that any further flashpoints could activate the suspended portions of these bans and deepen the fallout from one chaotic evening in Lyon.
