Marvin Ducksch Faces Consequences After DUI Incident

Marvin Ducksch has been warned in the starkest possible terms how close he came to catastrophe.

The Birmingham City striker appeared at Leamington Spa Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday after a late-night crash on Easter Monday, just hours after coming off the bench in his side’s 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town. He pleaded guilty to driving his Mercedes over the legal alcohol limit.

The 32-year-old, signed from Werder Bremen in August for €2 million, was found to have 53 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.

“You can consider yourself lucky first of all that you weren’t killed and secondly that the other drivers weren’t killed. That’s how serious this matter is,” chairman of the bench John Kiely told him, underlining the gravity of the case.

Heavy punishment for Birmingham forward

The consequences were severe. Ducksch received a 14‑month driving ban and a financial hit totalling £20,240.

That package includes a £16,155 fine, a £2,000 surcharge, £85 in court costs and £1,000 in compensation to each of the two female drivers involved in the collision. The court agreed he can pay in monthly instalments of £2,000.

In a prepared statement, Ducksch admitted he “did have alcohol before he drove” and accepted that he had “clipped an oncoming car and another one following behind.”

Prosecutor Lina Akther told the court the German believed he would be under the limit and stressed his contrition: “He thought he would be under the limit and the defendant was apologetic in his prepared statement.”

Akther outlined how the crash unfolded. Ducksch told officers he had been driving, went to change his music and then crashed, adding that he “wasn’t sure how.” He also claimed he had been trying to avoid a tree branch.

Club sanctions and character references

Defence solicitor Julia Morgan said Ducksch checked on the welfare of the other drivers at the scene. One woman suffered a nosebleed and injuries to her forehead and thumb.

Morgan also revealed that Birmingham City have already taken their own action. “He has been penalised financially and further by not being permitted to play in a number of matches following this incident. That illustrates how seriously incidents of this nature are taken,” she told the court.

Despite the conviction, the club submitted character references describing Ducksch as a man of “impeccable character,” a picture at odds with the recklessness of the incident but reflective of his conduct day to day around the training ground.

On the pitch, his impact has been clear. In a testing Championship campaign and domestic cup outings, the former Borussia Dortmund forward has produced 11 goals and two assists across 36 appearances, a return that underlines his importance to Birmingham’s attack.

Now comes the harder part. With a driving ban in place and a sizeable financial penalty hanging over him, Ducksch must repair a reputation damaged in one alcohol-fuelled lapse and prove that his most decisive contributions will be confined to the pitch.
