The 74-year-old, who was only confirmed as permanent boss this summer after steering Celtic to a Premiership and Scottish Cup double last season, is said to be recovering well. No further medical details have been released, with the club stressing the need for privacy.

O'Neill was in the dugout as recently as Monday night, overseeing Celtic’s 1-0 win over Dundee at Parkhead as they began the defence of their league title. There was no indication then that he would require treatment, underlining how sudden the development appeared from the outside.
