Mark van Bommel Appointed Belgium Head Coach for Euro 2028

Belgium have turned to a familiar enemy from their neighbours to lead the next phase of the Red Devils project, appointing former Netherlands captain Mark van Bommel as head coach on a deal running through Euro 2028.

The 49-year-old steps into the role vacated by Rudi Garcia, whose spell ended after Belgium’s quarter-final exit to eventual world champions Spain at the 2026 World Cup. The disappointment in that tournament closed one chapter. Van Bommel’s arrival is designed to open another, with a harder edge.

He will officially take charge on 15 August.

From Antwerp revival to national stage

Van Bommel’s candidacy was built in large part on what he did just down the road. At Royal Antwerp he didn’t just win – he transformed the club into a domestic force.

Across a two-year spell, Antwerp collected the Belgian league title, the Belgian Cup and the Belgian Super Cup. A complete domestic set, achieved with a side that mirrored their coach: aggressive, disciplined, relentlessly competitive.

That body of work, combined with his reputation as a fierce, vocal leader during his playing days with the Netherlands, PSV and Bayern Munich, convinced the Belgian Football Association that he was the man to steer a squad still rich in talent but searching for a new identity.

Sporting director Vincent Mannaert underlined exactly that, highlighting Van Bommel’s “international experience as both a coach and player” as a decisive factor. The message from the federation is clear: this is not a reset, it is an escalation.

“Disciplined, ambitious and brave”

Van Bommel wasted no time outlining the tone he intends to set.

“It is a great honour to become head coach of Belgium,” he said. “Belgium has outstanding players and enormous potential. Together with my coaching staff, we want to build a team that is disciplined, ambitious and brave enough to compete with the very best.”

Those three words – disciplined, ambitious, brave – will shape expectations. Belgium’s so‑called golden generation has already passed its peak, but the next wave is emerging. Van Bommel is being asked to weld it into something ruthless enough to go deep at Euro 2028.

Dutch core in the dugout

He will not be alone in trying to do it. Belgium’s bench will carry a distinctly Dutch accent.

Van Bommel will be assisted by Boudewijn Zenden, Maarten Martens and Reinier Robbemond, a staff built around technical knowledge, tactical detail and a shared understanding of how their new boss wants to play. Zenden brings experience from major tournaments as a player, Martens and Robbemond know the rhythms of Belgian and Dutch football inside out.

The group inherits a squad that still expects to compete with Europe’s elite. That expectation will be tested immediately.

Italy, France, Turkey: no soft landing

There is no gentle introduction, no time to ease into the job. Van Bommel’s early assignment is to navigate a brutal run of Nations League fixtures against Italy, France and Turkey across September and October.

Those games will offer an instant measure of how quickly his ideas take hold. Results will matter, but so will the edge, the structure, the intensity. Belgium’s supporters have seen talent before. What they now demand is a team that plays with the conviction of a side determined to finally turn potential into trophies.
