Maresca's Bold Choices for Champions League Clash

Enzo Maresca is not expected to tiptoe into his first Champions League league-phase test with Manchester City. He looks ready to use his squad, and that could mean a bold call over a £125m midfielder.

Fernandez faces early reality check

Enzo Fernandez was never meant to start against Coventry City. The plan was simple: ease him in, let him watch the tempo of the Premier League from the bench, then drip-feed minutes.

That plan lasted until the warm-up.

Nico O'Reilly pulled up with a back problem, Maresca ripped up his teamsheet, and Fernandez was thrown straight into the XI for his full debut. He lasted 76 minutes, working alongside Elliot Anderson in midfield, a solid if unspectacular first outing in sky blue.

Now comes the real test of Maresca’s ruthlessness. With just three days between Coventry and Porto, and a Manchester derby looming on the horizon, the City head coach is expected to rotate. Fernandez, despite the price tag, is not immune. A place on the bench in Portugal would underline that this squad will move on merit and freshness, not transfer fees.

Bouaddi waiting for the call

If Fernandez steps aside, Ayyoub Bouaddi is the man ready to walk in.

The young midfielder already knows the rhythm and intensity of Champions League nights from his time at Lille. Maresca has spoken about depth and versatility since taking over; this is exactly the kind of fixture where that depth has to show.

Bouaddi’s inclusion would be one of up to four changes from the side that beat Coventry. It would also give City a slightly different profile in the middle of the pitch: Anderson’s energy, Bouaddi’s European know-how, and the structure behind them to let the front four breathe.

Foden primed as Ndiaye cramps up

There was another debut drama at the weekend. Iliman Ndiaye’s first appearance for City ended in the 87th minute, not through injury but cramp. The Senegalese forward had run his race.

He is expected to be available for the trip to the Estadio do Dragao, yet the door has swung open for Phil Foden. Fully fit again and desperate for rhythm, Foden is pushing hard to be restored to the starting XI. On a European night, away to Porto, his creativity and knack for finding space between the lines could be too valuable to leave out.

Jeremy Doku will not be involved. His calf problem keeps him sidelined, trimming Maresca’s options out wide and making Foden’s return even more significant.

Fresh legs at full-back

The changes may not stop in midfield or attack.

Abdukodir Khusanov and Josko Gvardiol filled the full-back berths against Coventry, but the schedule is already unforgiving. Matheus Nunes and Rayan Ait-Nouri are both in line to come in, offering fresh legs and a different attacking angle from the flanks.

That matters against Porto’s wide threats. William Gomes and Pepe will test City’s shape and concentration, and Maresca knows his full-backs cannot afford heavy legs in that duel.
