Marcus Rashford Returns to England Squad for 2026 World Cup

Marcus Rashford has stepped back onto the international stage and straight into the spotlight.

Named in England’s squad for the 2026 World Cup after a resurgent season on loan at Barcelona, the forward moved quickly to show where his gratitude lies – and to clear up where it doesn’t.

Left out of Euro 2024 after a bruising campaign with Manchester United, Rashford rebuilt his form and confidence at Camp Nou under Hansi Flick. The reward arrived with his recall for the World Cup, announced by Thomas Tuchel, and the 26-year-old marked the moment with an emotional post on Instagram.

“Special thanks to Unai, Hansi, Thomas, Aston Villa, Barcelona and England for believing in me when things got tough,” he wrote.

The omission of Manchester United from that list did not go unnoticed. For a player so closely tied to Old Trafford, it sparked instant debate over whether the snub was deliberate, a subtle message about the struggles of the past 18 months.

Rashford moved to shut that down almost immediately.

Taking to X, he clarified the intent behind his words and reaffirmed his allegiance to his parent club. “To make my IG story clear. It’s not a dig of any sort! I’m a MU supporter, and that remains. I was showing gratitude to the clubs and coaches that I have worked with over the past 18 months, they have played a big role in this call up,” he posted.

The distinction matters. Those 18 months have taken him from doubt to redemption, from missing a major tournament to leading the line again for his country. Aston Villa, Barcelona, Unai, Flick and Tuchel all form part of that journey, and Rashford chose to spotlight the people who directly shaped his revival.

World Cup Group

His recall comes as England prepare for a World Cup group that looks manageable on paper but loaded with potential traps: Croatia, with all their tournament know-how; Ghana, physical and fearless; Panama, awkward and stubborn.

For Rashford, it is another chance on the biggest stage. For England, it is the return of a forward who has been to the brink, taken the criticism, and fought his way back into the shirt.
