Manchester United Target Felix Nmecha as Casemiro Successor
Manchester United are pushing ahead with plans to rebuild their midfield, and the search for Casemiro’s long-term replacement has taken them somewhere familiar: across town, and back into Manchester City’s academy.
Felix Nmecha, now a World Cup standout with Germany and a key figure at Borussia Dortmund, has emerged as a serious target, according to reports in Germany. United first appeared on his trail in February. His performances this summer have only sharpened that interest.
World Cup stage, global spotlight
Nmecha, 25, has used the World Cup to showcase exactly the kind of profile United are missing at the base of midfield. He lit up Germany’s 7-1 demolition of Curacao, opening the scoring with a ruthless, first-time strike from 20 yards, whipped into the top corner with his right foot.
The goal turned heads. His all-round display kept them there.
He covered ground relentlessly, drove through the lines, and repeatedly killed Curacao counterattacks before they developed. That blend of power, timing and defensive awareness is precisely what United’s recruitment team have been scouring the market for as Casemiro’s influence wanes and his future comes under review.
From City prospect to Dortmund mainstay
Nmecha’s story already carries a twist for United fans. He grew up in Manchester City’s system, progressing through their youth ranks before moving to Wolfsburg in 2021 after an eye-catching loan spell at Anderlecht.
From there, his rise has been steady rather than explosive. Wolfsburg gave him regular football. Dortmund have given him a platform.
Now, reports in Germany suggest he could be heading back to Manchester — only this time in red. United are understood to see him as a potential cornerstone in a revamped midfield, one who could anchor the side for years rather than months.
They are far from alone.
City, Real Madrid and a €70m problem
Sky Sports Deutschland reports that United are just one of several clubs circling. Manchester City, his former employers and current neighbours, have also been credited with interest. Real Madrid are believed to be watching closely as well, with returning manager Jose Mourinho understood to be an admirer.
Dortmund, though, hold the cards.
The Bundesliga club have Nmecha tied down on a contract until 2030. A release clause of £61m does exist, but it does not become active until the summer of 2027. That timing is crucial. Dortmund are relaxed about his future and, as things stand, are planning for him to stay through the coming seasons rather than cashing in now.
The message from the player’s camp points in the same direction.
Agent cools talk of an imminent move
Speaking to Bild, Nmecha’s agent Tobi Alabi underlined that the midfielder is not agitating for a transfer.
“Felix still has two years left on his contract, and we fully respect that. Borussia Dortmund have played an important role in his development,” Alabi said, stressing the gratitude Nmecha feels towards the club and the trust they have shown.
He highlighted the player’s steady progression “from season to season” and acknowledged that strong performances naturally trigger questions over his future. For now, though, Alabi was clear: Nmecha is “determined to give everything for Borussia Dortmund, to fight for the club and to help the team achieve its goals.”
The subtext is obvious. Interest is real. Movement is not.
United’s wider midfield rebuild
While Nmecha may be one for the medium term rather than this window, United’s midfield overhaul has already begun. The club are on the verge of confirming the £39m signing of Brazil and Atalanta midfielder Ederson, who is expected to complete his medical duties while on World Cup duty.
Ederson’s arrival would bring energy and aggression. Nmecha, if United can ever prise him from Dortmund’s grip, would add height, control and a two-way presence in the middle of the pitch.
For now, the German international remains a World Cup standout and a Dortmund pillar, not a player packing his bags. But with United, City and Real Madrid all lurking, the question is no longer whether Europe’s elite have noticed him.
It’s how long Dortmund can keep them all at arm’s length.
