Manchester United Rejects Galatasaray’s Bold Bid for Bruno Fernandes

Manchester United have no intention of entertaining Galatasaray’s latest move for Bruno Fernandes, with the club prepared to bat away what has been described as an “audacious approach” for their captain as the transfer window ticks towards its close.

The Turkish champions have long viewed Fernandes as a statement signing. Now, with the window entering its final weeks, they have moved from admiration to action, drawing up a substantial financial package in an effort to lure the 31-year-old to Istanbul.

United’s response is blunt: he is not for sale.

Release clause intrigue, firm United stance

Fernandes is entering the final 12 months of the three-year deal he signed in 2024, though United hold an option to extend that contract by a further season. His current terms contain a £56million release clause, but it is only open to clubs outside England – a detail that naturally keeps continental giants and ambitious clubs like Galatasaray interested.

Even so, United are planning the new season with their captain at the heart of it. The club has fought off speculation around Fernandes before, and nothing in their position has shifted despite Galatasaray’s renewed push.

Reports in May from The Mirror framed Fernandes as a “dream target” for the Istanbul side. That ambition fits their recent transfer strategy: Galatasaray have not shied away from big names or big fees, bringing in the likes of Victor Osimhen and Leroy Sane to fuel domestic dominance and European relevance.

This time, according to The Independent, they have gone in with a bold proposal. It will be met with a swift rejection. United are drawing a clear line as the Premier League season begins.

Carrick’s key man for league and Europe

Timing matters. The Premier League kicks off on Friday, and United’s Champions League return is just around the corner. Michael Carrick views Fernandes as central to both campaigns, and club figures are unwilling to rip out their creative core days before the season starts.

United finished third last term, their best league placing since 2022/23, and that climb back towards the top four has sharpened the sense of opportunity. The 2026/27 season brings Champions League football back to Old Trafford for the first time since 2024, a stage Fernandes has always embraced.

He is expected to carry a heavy load again – as playmaker, as captain, as standard-setter – starting with United’s opening league fixture away to Hull City on Saturday, August 22 (12:30pm).

Contract questions can wait

For now, there are no active plans to offer Fernandes a fresh contract before the season starts. That position may not be permanent. Club sources accept that the picture could change once the campaign is underway, especially if his influence remains as pronounced as in recent years.

Fernandes himself has sounded every inch the committed captain. Speaking last month, he underlined what it means to wear United’s shirt and the weight that comes with it.

“Playing for Manchester United is always a special moment for everyone. At the same time, it brings a lot of responsibility with it,” he said. “But I don’t think anyone comes to Manchester United thinking that we won’t have the responsibility to win again, to be at the top of the Premier League, at the top of European football, because the club’s history brings that responsibility.

“Regardless of the most recent years, they were not at the level that the club was used to. I think everyone always believes that we can be the ones who are going to do this, the ones who are going to turn the page, the ones who are going to make it possible for United to fight on all fronts. And I think that has to be special for us players, to realise that we can be the main, let’s say, protagonists of this change of history for United to win again.”

Those are not the words of a captain angling for the exit.

Galatasaray may test the waters again before deadline day. The release clause ensures his name will never be far from the rumour mill. But as United step into a season that could redefine their trajectory under Carrick, they look ready to bet heavily on one constant: Bruno Fernandes, still at the centre of it all.
