Manchester United Pursue Mateus Fernandes as Midfield Rebuild Intensifies
Manchester United’s midfield rebuild is gathering speed, and the next piece of it looks increasingly likely to be Mateus Fernandes.
Fresh from tying up a deal for Brazilian midfielder Ederson, United have turned their attention firmly to West Ham’s standout performer from last season’s relegation campaign. With Champions League football returning to Old Trafford and a heavier schedule looming, the club want at least one more major midfield signing – and all roads currently lead to Fernandes.
United Close In on West Ham’s Prize Asset
United have already made progress. Personal terms are understood to be agreed with the 21-year-old Portugal international, who shone in a struggling West Ham side and has little appetite for another year in the Championship after previously going down with Southampton.
West Ham, though, are not in the mood to sell cheaply. Fernandes is valued at around £85m, and the London club know they have competition on their hands, which only strengthens their position at the negotiating table.
The player’s preference could prove decisive. Reports in recent weeks have painted a clear picture: Fernandes is keen on Old Trafford, attracted by the prospect of lining up alongside his idol and compatriot Bruno Fernandes at the so‑called Theatre of Dreams. That pull, for a young Portuguese midfielder, is powerful.
PSG and Spurs Circle, But United Still Lead
This is not a one-horse race. Paris Saint‑Germain have registered their interest, while Tottenham Hotspur have surged into contention and are described as being “very close” to agreeing personal terms with the West Ham midfielder themselves.
The pressure on United seemed to rise as Spurs stepped up. Then came a fresh update from a United-focused source, Theatre of Red, which cut through the noise: Roberto De Zerbi’s side are still considered a “distant second” in the chase. The message was clear – unless United step away, they remain strong favourites to get the deal done.
That stance reflects the broader strategy at Old Trafford. The club hierarchy view Fernandes as central to a new-look midfield built to cope with the intensity and volume of a Champions League season. Ederson is only the start; Fernandes is the statement piece.
Six-Year Offer on the Table for Summerville
Midfield is the headline act, but it is not the only department under review.
United have long been expected to move for a left-sided attacker this summer, with Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers among those admired. Now, another name has surged to the forefront: Crysencio Summerville, currently catching the eye on the biggest stage of all.
Summerville has exploded into the 2026 World Cup with two goals in two games for the Netherlands in North America, and his form has sharpened interest across Europe. Following West Ham’s relegation, the winger is believed to be available for around £50m – a figure that has not gone unnoticed at Old Trafford.
One reporter has claimed United have already put a six-year contract on the table for the 24-year-old, signalling just how serious they are about reshaping their attacking options as well as their midfield.
Rashford Question Hangs Over the Attack
Any move for Summerville could gather pace if Marcus Rashford leaves. The England international has been linked with Barcelona, but that path has cooled, with the Catalan club not taking up their buy option.
For now, Rashford remains a United player, his future unresolved, his role in the coming season still a live discussion inside the club. Behind him, though, plans are being drawn up, contracts are being offered, and targets are being lined up.
United have started their summer with intent. Ederson is in the bag, Fernandes is within reach, and a six-year proposal sits in front of Summerville. The only question now is how far they are prepared to go, in fees and in faith, to turn this bold blueprint into a squad capable of carrying Old Trafford back to the very top.
