Manchester United Pursue Aurélien Tchouaméni as Casemiro Successor

Manchester United refuse to give up on Aurélien Tchouaméni.

Beaten once already in this window, they have gone back to Real Madrid for the French midfielder, driven by a glaring hole at the heart of their team after Casemiro’s departure to Inter Miami.

United’s need is obvious. Casemiro’s exit has stripped the side of its specialist shield in front of the back four, and the club’s recruitment so far has tilted in a different direction. André Santos and Youri Tielemans bring energy, passing and forward thrust. They do not bring what Casemiro did at his peak: control without the ball, authority in duels, positional discipline.

Tchouaméni does. That is why United keep knocking.

According to The Sun, the 24-year-old looked set to stay at Real Madrid. Approaches last winter and early in the current summer window were rebuffed. At one stage he was even close to extending his contract, a clear sign of how firmly Madrid still see him in their long-term plans.

Yet United have come again. The message from Old Trafford is consistent: they want a young midfielder who can anchor the side, balance the structure and grow with a new core. Tchouaméni’s profile matches that brief almost perfectly – a natural defensive midfielder, international pedigree, and the physical and tactical range to dominate the base of midfield for years.

This is not a simple chase, though. There is a major obstacle, and his name is José Mourinho.

Mourinho is counting on Tchouaméni for the 2026–2027 season, seeing him as a central piece rather than a dispensable asset. That stance hardens Madrid’s position and raises the level of difficulty for United, who know they are not just trying to sign a player, but to prise away a cornerstone of another club’s future.

So United wait, ask, probe again. They have identified their ideal Casemiro successor. The question now is whether Real Madrid are prepared to loosen their grip on a midfielder they believe will define their next era.
