Manchester United's Midfield Overhaul: Mount Offered to Milan

Manchester United’s midfield overhaul is gathering pace, and one big name has quietly been pushed towards the exit.

According to reports in Italy, United have offered Mason Mount to AC Milan in a deal worth around €25m (£21.5m), as the club look to reshape the centre of the pitch and raise funds for further signings.

Mount, signed from Chelsea with high expectations, now finds himself on the wrong side of the pecking order under Michael Carrick after an injury-hit spell at Old Trafford. His availability has alerted Milan, who are preparing for what is being billed as a bold, attacking summer under new head coach Ruben Amorim.

Mount offered to Milan as Amorim gives the nod

MilanPress report that United have “proposed” Mount to the Serie A side, with Amorim giving the green light to explore a deal. The 25-year-old, born in 1999, is viewed as an attainable opportunity at a realistic price, with his current market value cited at around €25m.

The Italian outlet stated on X that “Amorim’s new Milan is gearing up for a transfer window full of big signings, also featuring opportunities and proposals,” before revealing Mount as one of the names put forward in recent hours.

United’s motivation is clear. The club are deep into a midfield rebuild. A deal is already in place for Atalanta’s Ederson Silva, and the hierarchy want at least one more addition, with a move for Matheus Fernandes still alive despite competition from Tottenham Hotspur.

To make that possible, they need sales. The plan had been to move on Manuel Ugarte, but a serious knee injury at the World Cup has effectively shut that door. Attention has turned to Mount, whose impact since arriving from Chelsea has been undermined by fitness problems and inconsistent minutes.

For United, a clean sale at a decent fee would ease the financial pressure of their recruitment drive. For Milan, it represents a chance to pick up a technically gifted midfielder entering his prime, with the blessing of a coach ready to build a new identity at San Siro.

Diallo going nowhere as Carrick draws a line

While Mount’s future hangs in the balance, Amad Diallo’s situation is far more straightforward.

The winger, who impressed under Amorim during the Portuguese coach’s time at Old Trafford, has also been linked with Milan in recent days. Italian reports suggested he could follow Mount to Serie A, adding another creative option to Amorim’s plans.

That idea has been firmly shut down.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, speaking on his YouTube channel, made United’s stance crystal clear: Amad Diallo is not for sale this summer.

Romano explained that various stories in Italy had floated the possibility of a move to Milan, but that Carrick has been adamant inside the club that Diallo must stay. United, he said, “fully expect Amad Diallo to remain part of their plans for the new season.”

Carrick’s position has been communicated internally and is being backed by the hierarchy. Any speculation linking Diallo to Milan or elsewhere runs into the same brick wall: United want him at Old Trafford, not on someone else’s wing.

So as United rip up and redraw their midfield options, two careers are heading in very different directions. Mount may be edging towards a new chapter in Milan, if negotiations advance from an exchange of information to concrete talks. Diallo, by contrast, has been ring‑fenced as part of the core for the coming campaign.

The question now is simple: who else will United sacrifice to finish the rebuild they have already started?
