Manchester United's Midfield Rebuild: Ederson or Fernandes?

Manchester United have their Champions League ticket in hand and, with it, a clear message about what comes next: the midfield is getting ripped up and rebuilt.

Casemiro is on his way out when his contract runs down. Manuel Ugarte is expected to follow him through the exit door. That leaves a glaring hole in the middle of the pitch and a club hierarchy under no illusions – at least two midfielders must come in, and a third would hardly be a luxury with a heavier schedule looming next season.

So the market work has already started. And it’s not just one iron in the fire.

United Move on Two Fronts

Ederson of Atalanta has been the headline name so far. United have held talks with his camp and are closing in on an agreement over personal terms, a sign of how serious their interest has become in the Brazilian.

But while that story gathers pace, another one is running alongside it – and inside Old Trafford, some see it as the smarter play.

United are understood to be advancing in their pursuit of Mateus Fernandes, with discussions with his representatives ongoing for the past four to six weeks. The framework of a deal is being built in the background, and the conditions around it tell their own story.

Any move for the Portuguese midfielder is expected to hinge on his current club being relegated from the Premier League. That scenario is edging closer after a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal left them two points from safety with only two games left. If the drop is confirmed, the door opens for United.

Fernandes comes with a powerful endorsement from inside the dressing room. Club captain Bruno Fernandes has recommended his compatriot, and that carries weight at a time when United are trying to be sharper and more targeted with their recruitment.

The numbers help, too. Fernandes is expected to be relatively cheap compared with other midfield options, a factor that will appeal to a club trying to stretch its budget across several positions. His performances in recent seasons have already caught the eye, and the prospect of landing him at a reasonable fee has stirred genuine excitement among fans.

Ederson vs Fernandes: The Value Call

Ederson’s path has taken its own twists. He was initially lined up for a move to Atletico Madrid, only for the Spanish side to turn instead to Joao Gomes. That change of direction has pushed Ederson closer to the Premier League, and United now find themselves with an advantage in the race for his signature.

On paper, it looks like a straight choice. In reality, United would prefer not to see it that way. But if it comes down to prioritising one, the case for Mateus Fernandes is strong.

Both players are likely to cost a similar amount if West Ham go down. Ederson brings experience at the highest level and has built a reputation in Serie A. Yet Fernandes offers something different: a higher ceiling, greater upside, and crucially, a body of work already put together in the Premier League despite his young age.

He has shown he can handle the pace, the physicality, the scrutiny. That matters when you are building a squad meant to last, not just plug gaps.

Neither Fernandes nor Ederson would walk straight into the starting XI. Not with other midfield targets being monitored and established names still in place. They would arrive as part of a broader reshaping, asked to compete, adapt, and grow into bigger roles.

But if United want the best value for money, if they want a midfielder who can grow with the project rather than simply serve it, Fernandes is the one who should sit at the top of the list.

The Champions League is back on the calendar. The question now is which midfielder will be running it for United when the anthem plays.
