Manchester United's Midfield Target: Focus on Defensive Signings

Manchester United have rebuilt the heart of their side this summer, but the most important piece of the puzzle is still missing.

Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos have arrived for a combined £85m, giving United fresh legs and guile in midfield. The club, though, want more than craft. They want a specialist: a defensive midfielder who can screen the back four and flip defence into attack in a heartbeat.

Jason Wilcox is in no rush. The director of football has resisted paying premium money for the likes of Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, and with room still left in the budget, United are carefully weighing up their final move in the market.

Five names sit on the shortlist. One, according to those close to the club, is “1000%” a player they adore. Another already has an agreement in place on personal terms.

Scott, Kone and a closed door at Bournemouth

Alex Scott has been the most persistent name around Old Trafford. The Bournemouth midfielder fits the Premier League-ready profile and, at 22, offers years of upside. United made an early enquiry, before Chelsea stepped in with a bid of their own.

The response from the south coast was blunt. Bournemouth instantly waved away United’s interest and rejected Chelsea’s offer. Scott has since turned down a new contract at the Vitality Stadium, with two years left on his current deal, a situation that would usually tempt a selling club to cash in.

Bournemouth are digging in instead. TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey has reported confidence within the club that Scott will eventually sign fresh terms, and the plan remains to bat away all offers this summer. United know they would have to pay top dollar to even bring Bournemouth to the table.

That resistance has nudged United towards Manu Kone. The Roma midfielder has climbed quickly up their list of options, and the interest is real. Ben Jacobs, speaking to the United Stand, described Kone as “definitely high in Manchester United’s thinking”, noting that Arsenal and Chelsea have also tracked him.

Kone’s involvement at the World Cup slowed any serious progress, but the picture has shifted. Multiple sources now claim United have reached an agreement over personal terms with the player for a move to Old Trafford. Club-to-club talks with Roma, however, have not yet started.

Sky Sports back up that stance on Kone, while also stressing that another name cannot be ignored.

Baleba: the ideal fit they “absolutely love”

Inside Old Trafford, Carlos Baleba is the one that makes football people lean forward in their chairs.

The Lille midfielder did not enjoy his best campaign last season, yet United’s recruitment team remain convinced by his profile. His physicality, defensive instincts and ability to break lines with the ball tick every box for the role they want filled.

On Wednesday, Graeme Bailey underlined just how highly Baleba is rated.

“What I am hearing is they want someone who can really help them defensively,” he said. “In an ideal world they’d just sign Carlos Baleba. They absolutely love his game. Yes, he didn’t have his best season, but they still believe he’d be an outstanding fit for Manchester United.”

The admiration is not subtle. Inside the club, Baleba is seen as close to the perfect solution. The question is whether “ideal world” turns into decisive action in the real one.

Tchouameni dream blocked, Adams and Berge monitored

On paper, Aurelien Tchouameni is the standout name on the list. In terms of pure quality, Jacobs believes the Real Madrid star “would be right near the top” of United’s targets. In reality, the door is closed.

Tchouameni has already agreed a new deal with Real Madrid, and as Jacobs bluntly put it, United’s admiration is “1,000% irrelevant if the player is going to stay at the football club.” For now, that is exactly the situation.

Lower down the list sits Tyler Adams. United’s interest in the Bournemouth and USMNT midfielder first surfaced when the club moved for Santos, and Jacobs has now confirmed that Adams remains in the frame. His pressing, energy and tactical discipline fit the brief, though he is clearly viewed as a secondary option behind Scott, Kone and Baleba.

Another name has quietly entered the conversation: Sander Berge. United are taking a serious look at the Fulham midfielder after learning his price tag. Berge offers Premier League experience, size and a calm presence in possession, and is being assessed as a potential value option if other pursuits stall.

A decisive call still to come

So the shortlist is set. Scott, admired but expensive and locked behind Bournemouth’s resolve. Kone, with personal terms understood to be agreed but no deal yet with Roma. Baleba, the one United “absolutely love” and, in a perfect world, would sign without hesitation. Adams and Berge, credible alternatives if the market shifts.

United have reshaped their midfield already. The final signing will define the balance of this team for years.
