Manchester United's Left-Back Dilemma: Lewis Hall or Antonee Robinson?

Manchester United are bracing for a battle they may not win over Lewis Hall – and Fulham’s Antonee Robinson is waiting in the wings if the move collapses.

United have already been busy, with Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Karl Darlow through the door on permanent deals. The expectation around Old Trafford was that another midfielder would follow. Instead, the transfer conversation has drifted towards the left flank, where Luke Shaw stands as the only established senior left-back likely to stay.

Harry Amass has impressed in pre-season but is still viewed as a loan candidate. Patrick Dorgu looks more at home higher up the pitch. Strip it back and the depth chart at left-back is thin. Painfully thin for a club with United’s ambitions.

Hall the priority – but Newcastle dig in

Lewis Hall is the name at the top of United’s list. Young, homegrown, technically sharp, and already showing his quality at Newcastle United, he fits the profile INEOS want. The problem? Newcastle have absolutely no need to sell.

talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook says United are “willing” to go as high as £60m to prise Hall out of the North East. Under normal circumstances, that kind of offer would test any club’s resolve. These aren’t normal circumstances for Newcastle.

They have already banked around £70m for Anthony Gordon, £100m for Sandro Tonali and now £75m for Bruno Guimaraes, who is set to join Arsenal. With that kind of income, there is no financial pressure, no looming deadline forcing their hand.

Crook floated the idea that Newcastle’s hierarchy may see Hall as a line in the sand – a chance to send a message that the “shop window is closed” and they are done cashing in on star assets. David Ornstein has already stated Hall will not leave this summer. Crook himself admitted the deal is “going to be difficult” for United to pull off.

The interest is real. The willingness to pay is real. Newcastle’s resistance looks just as real.

Robinson emerges as the alternative

That is where Antonee Robinson comes in.

“If/when” United miss out on Hall, Crook insists the Fulham defender is one to watch. The USA international has quietly built a strong reputation at Craven Cottage: quick across the ground, aggressive in the duel, and used to the rhythm and physicality of the Premier League.

“Keep an eye on Fulham’s Antonee Robinson, the USA international,” Crook said. “Their experienced Premier League campaigner would probably come a lot cheaper than Lewis Hall. He’s someone I’m told is on Manchester United’s radar as well.”

The logic is obvious. Robinson offers top-flight experience, a more realistic price tag and the kind of athletic profile that suits a side looking to push its full-backs high. For a club still wrestling with Financial Fair Play parameters and a squad that needs work in multiple areas, he represents a pragmatic solution.

United’s need at left-back is not theoretical. It is structural. Shaw’s injury record over recent seasons, the lack of a natural deputy, and the expectation that Amass will go out on loan all point in the same direction: they cannot afford to roll into another campaign short in that position.

So the picture is clear. Hall is the statement signing, the long-term bet. Robinson is the shrewd, Premier League-ready alternative. The clock is ticking on Newcastle’s stance, Fulham’s resolve and United’s willingness to pivot.

At some point, they will have to decide which kind of left-back defines this new era.
