Manchester United Faces Injury Crisis Ahead of Ipswich Clash

Manchester United’s squad is already under strain as they look to shake off a dreadful start to the Premier League season – and Old Trafford will feel that shortage when Ipswich Town arrive.

Between them, the two sides are set to be without nine players for Sunday’s clash, a game that already carries a hint of early-season pressure for Michael Carrick.

United wounded after shock Hull defeat

United’s campaign could hardly have opened in more deflating fashion. A 2-0 defeat to Hull City – widely tipped for a relegation fight – has left Carrick’s team chasing a response rather than setting the pace.

They have moved aggressively in the market, landing Carlos Baleba from Brighton and Hove Albion in a £70million deal. He was supposed to add energy and control in midfield. Instead, he will watch this one from the stands.

“He’s got a little ankle issue, so maybe a couple of weeks or so, three weeks,” Carrick said of the new signing. “We knew that before. It’s no major issue.” A blow for Sunday, but not a long-term crisis.

Baleba is not alone. Amad Diallo will also miss out after picking up a minor training-ground injury that kept him out of the Hull defeat. Carrick was clear: “Amad won’t be involved, he’ll be out for a little bit longer.”

Mason Mount is a step closer, but not quite ready to be thrown back into the intensity of a Premier League fixture. The midfielder has rejoined training and Carrick struck a more upbeat tone: “Mase is back around the group, he trained this week, so a real positive.” Encouraging, yet Ipswich will come too soon.

At the back, Matthijs De Ligt’s long road back continues. The Dutch defender has been out for an extended spell but is finally back on the grass.

“Matta’s obviously been out for a long period of time. But he’s training and it’s great to have him back,” Carrick said. “He won’t be involved, but he’s in good shape and moving in a good direction.” For a defence that looked shaky at Hull, his return to full fitness cannot come quickly enough.

Even the goalkeeping department has taken a hit. Veteran backup Tom Heaton is sidelined after picking up an injury in the pre-season friendly against PSG. There is no clear timeframe yet on when he will return, leaving United a little lighter behind their No.1.

Ipswich travel without four

If United arrive under scrutiny, Ipswich travel with momentum. Written off as heavy underdogs on the opening weekend, Gary O’Neil’s side went to Sunderland and came away with a win. That result has changed the tone around their trip to Old Trafford.

They will, though, be without four players of their own.

• Jaden Philogene, absent for the victory over Sunderland, remains out with an ankle problem.
• Florentino Luis is again unavailable as he continues to nurse a calf injury that also kept him out of the opener.
• Azor Matusiwa, another who missed the Sunderland game, is still sidelined with a thigh complaint.
• Jack Taylor stays on the treatment table as he recovers from a knee issue. None of the quartet will be involved.

Early test of depth and nerve

So Carrick enters United’s first home league game already juggling absences, searching for a reaction, and trying to bed in a record signing who cannot yet kick a ball for him.

Ipswich arrive lighter in numbers too, but with belief and a statement away win already banked.

For United, this isn’t just about three points. It’s an early examination of how quickly a shaken squad can steady itself – and whether the names missing from the teamsheet become the story of their season, or just a footnote.
