Manchester United vs Ipswich: Injury Woes and Pressure Mount

Manchester United head into their Old Trafford curtain-raiser already patched up and under pressure.

Michael Carrick’s side, beaten 2-0 at Hull on the opening weekend, are hunting their first points of the season against newly-promoted Ipswich on Sunday – but they will have to do it without at least nine players.

Carrick’s options cut before a ball is kicked

The mood around United shifted slightly in midweek with the £70million arrival of Carlos Baleba from Brighton, a marquee signing designed to inject energy and control into midfield.

He won’t be anywhere near the pitch.

Baleba picked up an ankle problem in pre-season, and Carrick has already ruled him out of the Ipswich clash. The United boss expects the 20-year-old to be missing for “maybe a couple of weeks or so, three weeks,” insisting it is “no major issue” but accepting the wait to see him in red will go on.

The absentees do not stop there.

Amad remains out after suffering a minor injury in training that also kept him from the defeat at Hull. Carrick was blunt when asked if the £37m winger could feature against Ipswich: “Amad won’t be involved, he’ll be out for a little bit longer.”

Mason Mount will also miss the game, though his situation carries more encouragement for United fans. The midfielder has rejoined the group and trained this week, with Carrick describing his return to the fold as “a real positive”, but the visit of Ipswich comes too soon for him to be risked.

At the back, Matthijs De Ligt is still unavailable as he works his way back from a long-term lay-off. The Dutch defender has finally returned to training and is edging closer to full fitness. Carrick is pleased with the progress – “he’s in good shape and moving in a good direction” – yet he confirmed De Ligt will not be involved on Sunday.

Even the goalkeeping department has taken a hit. Veteran reserve Tom Heaton, injured during a pre-season friendly against PSG, remains sidelined. Carrick has not put a date on his return, leaving United light on experienced back-up between the posts.

Ipswich travel with problems of their own

Ipswich arrive with momentum after victory over Sunderland, but Kieran McKenna’s side are also carrying their own injury list.

Jaden Philogene, who missed the win over the Black Cats with an ankle issue, is still out. Midfielder Florentino Luis remains unavailable because of a calf problem, another absentee from that Sunderland game who has not recovered in time.

Azor Matusiwa, sidelined last week with a thigh complaint, will again play no part.

Both managers, then, must juggle resources and reshuffle plans before a ball is kicked at Old Trafford. For Carrick, already under scrutiny after that flat opening-day defeat, the equation is stark: reduced numbers, rising pressure, and a home crowd demanding a response.
