Manchester United Pursue £60m Deal for Carlos Baleba

Manchester United are pushing hard to land Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba, with talks between the clubs described as positive as they edge towards an agreement for the 22-year-old.

United have tabled an opening offer worth around £60 million (€70m), with a further £5m in potential add-ons, according to The Athletic. Brighton believe that bid falls short of their valuation, but there is no sense of a breakdown. The two clubs remain in amicable dialogue, working to close the gap on the final fee.

United’s midfield overhaul

Midfield has become the centre of United’s summer rebuild. The club have already brought in Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa and Andrey Santos from Chelsea, reshaping the core of Michael Carrick’s side.

A deal for Atalanta’s Ederson had been agreed earlier in the window, only for United to walk away after concerns over the Brazilian’s knee. They then turned to Elliot Anderson, but the England international chose a move to rivals Manchester City instead, a setback that sharpened United’s focus on other targets.

Injuries have only heightened the urgency. Manuel Ugarte picked up an injury while on World Cup duty with Uruguay, and Mason Mount missed United’s final two pre-season fixtures, leaving Carrick short of options in the middle of the pitch as competitive games approach.

Brighton’s midfield pillar

Baleba has emerged as United’s preferred answer. The Cameroonian joined Brighton from Lille in the summer of 2023 and quickly forced his way into the heart of their team. He has already clocked up 112 appearances in all competitions for the south-coast club, an impressive return for a player still only 22.

Last season he featured 35 times for Brighton, his rhythm interrupted only briefly by his involvement with Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations. His mix of energy, physical presence and ball-winning ability has made him one of Brighton’s key performers and a logical target for a United side trying to add legs and bite to their midfield.

What awaits at Old Trafford

If the deal goes through, Baleba will walk into a fiercely competitive engine room. He would join Tielemans and Santos in a refreshed unit, battling for minutes alongside Kobbie Mainoo and captain Bruno Fernandes in Carrick’s first-team plans.

United want the move wrapped up quickly. With pre-season now over and the start of the campaign looming, there is a clear desire to have Baleba in the building and integrated into Carrick’s system as soon as possible.

For now, the lines of communication between United and Brighton stay open and constructive. Both clubs are working towards a compromise on the final valuation, and there is confidence on all sides that a deal will be struck.

If that optimism holds, Baleba’s next appearance in red may come not on the south coast, but under the lights at Old Trafford.
