Manchester United Target Bradley Locko as Left-Back Search Intensifies

Manchester United’s hunt for a new left-back is heading into the final stretch of the window, and a fresh name has moved into view: Bradley Locko.

The Brest defender is willing to join United and link up with Michael Carrick’s squad, according to journalist Dylan McBennett, as the club accelerates plans to strengthen on the left side of defence before the deadline.

United cool on Balde as costs bite

United have been scouring the market for days, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that Alejandro Balde was seriously considered. The Barcelona full-back fits the elite profile INEOS would like, but the numbers do not.

Romano explained on his YouTube channel that United held talks with Jorge Mendes about Balde around a week ago. The response from Old Trafford was clear: the total package – fee and wages – is simply too expensive right now.

So United have pivoted. The idea of a superstar has given way to something more pragmatic: a reliable, ready-made left-back who can compete immediately and won’t blow up the wage structure.

Romano likened the thinking to the 2023 loan move for Sergio Reguilon from Tottenham. Not a like-for-like target, but that type of deal – an experienced, international-profile full-back who can slot in quickly and raise the level of competition.

He stressed that United “are still looking for a solution at left-back” and expects the club to make a signing in that position before the window closes.

Locko enters the frame

Into that context steps Bradley Locko.

McBennett reported on X that the 24-year-old Frenchman is “among names that would be open to joining the club before the transfer deadline” if United move for him. He added that Locko is one of “numerous left-backs with desire to join United this summer.”

For a player whose career has been quietly building in Ligue 1, it is a significant moment. Locko joined Brest in 2023 and is tied to the club until 2027, a long contract that gives the French side leverage in any negotiations.

On the pitch, he has put together 67 appearances in all competitions for Brest, contributing five assists from left-back. The numbers are modest, but they underline a defender who can offer something going forward as well as defensively.

A late-window decision

United’s need is obvious. The club want that position resolved before the deadline, and every indication from Romano is that a left-back signing is expected.

The shortlist is broad, the budget is tight, and the days are running out. Locko is ready to say yes.

Now the question is whether United decide he is the “solution” they have been searching for in the final week of the window.
