Manchester United's Interest in Aurelien Tchouameni: £68 Million Opportunity

Manchester United have been handed a sliver of encouragement in their long-standing admiration of Aurelien Tchouameni – and the price being floated would have sounded unthinkable not long ago.

A report in England claims Real Madrid are willing to sell the France international to United this summer for around £68 million, a figure that sits well below the sums being thrown around for midfielders in the current market.

A new contract – and a lingering doubt

Earlier this month, Fabrizio Romano reported that Tchouameni had agreed a new deal at the Bernabeu running until 2031. On the face of it, that should have closed the door on any move. A long contract at Real Madrid usually means one thing: you’re part of the project.

But Madrid have yet to formally announce that extension. That silence has kept speculation alive and given United just enough encouragement to keep asking questions.

United journalist Andy Mitten lifted the lid on the uncertainty on Talk of the Devils. He explained that after Tchouameni signed the contract, he contacted a source in Madrid and received a pointed reply: “They could still sell him.” The message was repeated for emphasis. Nothing is ever completely off the table at Real Madrid if the numbers are big enough.

Mitten made it clear that Tchouameni is “perfectly happy in Madrid” and that United’s interest has been long-standing and entirely logical for a player of his calibre. Yet he also stressed that if the situation changed, the midfielder would be “perfectly happy” to play for United.

The bigger picture is financial. Mitten’s conversations with reporters following the Spanish national team in the United States brought the same theme: Madrid want to buy big, so they may need to sell big.

Real Madrid’s balancing act

That is where the internal maths in Madrid becomes fascinating. Who can they move on for serious money?

Fede Valverde has been told he is in line to be captain, a status that makes him difficult to sacrifice. Eduardo Camavinga, hugely talented and versatile, is unlikely to command quite the same fee as Tchouameni. The Frenchman, as a pure defensive midfielder with Champions League and LaLiga titles already on his CV, is arguably their most sellable elite asset in that role.

Mitten admitted any United move “looks improbable” and has always looked that way. The only opening, he suggested, comes if Madrid decide they have to cash in on one of their best players to fund another marquee signing. In modern football, money still calls the shots.

That is where Thursday’s claims from The Sun come in. The paper reported that Madrid are prepared to sell Tchouameni to United this summer, despite new manager Jose Mourinho having initially planned to keep him.

The twist? The sale would be designed to bankroll a blockbuster attempt to sign Rodri from Manchester City.

£68m for Tchouameni – a bargain in this market?

The same outlet has now attached a number to that possibility: £68 million. Its headline states that Madrid are willing to sanction a £68m deal for Tchouameni to fund an ambitious move for Rodri, valued at around £85m.

The suggestion is stark. Mourinho is “ready to sell” Tchouameni to allow Madrid to go after the Spain international, widely regarded as the outstanding holding midfielder in world football.

On a purely sporting level, it is a gamble. As things stand, Tchouameni is the only senior, specialist defensive midfielder in Madrid’s squad. Letting him go would leave a gaping hole in the centre of the pitch unless Rodri could be prised away from a club and a manager who have built their recent dominance around him.

The financial logic, though, is what keeps the story alive. In a window where Mateus Fernandes has gone for £85m, Sandro Tonali for £100m and Elliot Anderson for £116m, a 24-year-old Real Madrid midfielder with league and European titles behind him, and a fresh agreement to stay until 2031, at £68m looks like an anomaly.

For United, it would be a bargain – on paper at least. A ready-made defensive anchor, entering his prime, with experience of the highest stage, at a fee significantly below recent benchmarks for the position.

For Madrid, it would be a ruthless, calculated move to trade one elite midfielder for another and reshape the heart of their team.

And for Tchouameni, it would mean walking away from the Bernabeu at the very moment he appeared to have secured his long-term future there.

The contract is agreed. The club have not announced it. The window is open. If Madrid really do need to “sell big”, the next few weeks will show whether Tchouameni is a cornerstone of their future – or the sacrifice that funds their next Galactico in midfield.
