Manchester United Aim to Overcome AC Milan as Carrick Faces Amorim

Manchester United’s pre-season has not been perfect, but it has been purposeful. One defeat in five friendlies, nine goals scored, and a sense that Michael Carrick’s ideas are beginning to bite. Now comes the most intriguing test of the summer: AC Milan, led by United’s former head coach Ruben Amorim.

It is only a friendly on paper. The subplots say otherwise.

United rising under Carrick

Carrick walked into the job with doubts swirling around the club. He has answered most of them with results. United won five of their last six Premier League matches last season to surge into third, and that late charge has carried into the summer.

His players look sharper, more connected, more willing to run for him. Only the first of their five pre-season games ended in defeat; two have finished in victory inside 90 minutes. The trajectory is clear: upwards.

Midfield, long seen as United’s weak point, has been the main focus of his rebuild. New signings have added control and bite in the centre of the pitch, and this is where Carrick expects his side to dominate again against Milan.

The betting markets reflect that confidence. United are favoured in the 1x2 market at 1.80, and our expert is backing them to justify that price with a win. The scoreline forecast is a controlled 2-0, with Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha tipped as the likeliest scorers for the Premier League side.

Amorim’s Milan still searching

On the opposite bench, Amorim is fighting a very different battle. His United tenure ended badly, a run of poor results capped by a League Cup exit to Grimsby Town. Now he returns as Milan boss, trying to reset his reputation and lift a club that stalled last season.

Massimiliano Allegri could take Milan only as far as the Europa League with a fifth-place finish in Serie A. Improvement is non-negotiable. Before they can think about that, they need a performance here.

So far, the signs have been shaky. Milan are winless in three pre-season friendlies under Amorim. Their last outing, a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea, underlined the problems. They carried almost no attacking threat, scraping an xG of just 0.29 and failing to register a single shot on target.

That lack of punch up front is central to this contest – and to the betting angle. Only 47% of Milan’s Serie A games last season saw both teams score, dropping to 42% away from home. The pattern suggests a side that can be blunted, especially on their travels.

Against a United defence that has grown more secure and will likely feature more first-team regulars, Milan’s forwards could again be left frustrated. Our pick follows that logic: BTTS – No at odds of 2.33.

Familiar foes, familiar outcome?

History offers little comfort to the Italians. Milan have not beaten United in any of their last six meetings, friendlies included. Three of those ended level after 90 minutes, three went United’s way.

The probable lineups hint at where this game may be won. United are expected to start Lammens in goal, with Mazraoui, Maguire, Heaven and Shaw across the back. Mainoo and Santos should anchor midfield, with Amad, Zirkzee, Dorgu and Mbeumo providing the attacking spark.

Milan, meanwhile, are likely to go with Torriani; Terracciano, De Winter, Pavlovic, Chukwueze; Modric, Comotto, Estupinan; Leao, Loftus-Cheek and Camarda. There is quality there, but under a new coach and system, cohesion has been slow to arrive.

Carrick’s side have blanked only once in pre-season. As more senior players get minutes, their attacking threat should increase. They were set for a clean sheet against Leeds before a late defensive lapse allowed an equaliser. That will still sting.

Milan, by contrast, look blunt. If they struggle again to turn possession into chances, United’s defence could expose them rather than the other way around.

Expect a cagey, controlled contest

Do not expect a repeat of United’s free-flowing win over Rosenborg. Amorim has turned to a five-man defence, prioritising structure and resistance. His Milan will almost certainly try to suffocate the game, slow the tempo, and frustrate Carrick’s side.

Recent numbers point in the same direction. United’s last two matches both finished under three goals. Against Leeds, they generated an xG of 1.17 from 15 shots – plenty of efforts, but not many truly clear chances.

The head-to-head record also leans towards a low tally. Three of the last four meetings between these clubs have produced two goals or fewer. The pattern is hard to ignore.

So the betting angle sharpens: United to win, Milan to fail to score, and a tight scoreline. Under 2.5 goals at 2.34 looks a strong play in that context.

A 2-0 United victory fits all of it: Carrick’s steady climb, Amorim’s early teething problems, and a pre-season night in Poland that could say plenty about where both clubs are heading.
