Lucas Bergvall Signs New Contract with Tottenham Amidst U-Turn

Lucas Bergvall has performed a sharp U-turn at Tottenham, signing a new contract just three months after telling the club he wanted out.

The 20-year-old Sweden midfielder had pushed for a summer move, frustrated by limited minutes following Roberto De Zerbi’s arrival towards the end of last season. His situation quickly alerted the market. Nottingham Forest tested Spurs’ resolve with a £38m bid, while Aston Villa and Chelsea also circled, sensing an opportunity.

Tottenham never budged. And now, neither has Bergvall.

So far this Premier League campaign, he has managed only 45 minutes for Spurs, a statistic that made his initial stance understandable. But the tone has changed. The club, fighting to move on from a chaotic relegation battle last season, has persuaded one of its brightest young talents to buy into the rebuild.

“I think we’re building something great here. It’s an exciting time for the club and that’s why I’m happy to extend my contract,” Bergvall said, outlining a vision that now aligns with De Zerbi’s.

“I’m always trying to achieve as much as possible, to be the best version of myself both on and off the pitch and I know this is the right place to do that.

“Personally, my goal is to produce more for the team – performances, goals and assists – to help as much as I can. I’m getting better every day in training and I’m looking forward to what will be a really good season ahead.”

From tension to commitment

Back in July, De Zerbi called Bergvall “a top, top, top player” but refused to beg him to stay, making it clear he would not keep anyone against their will. The Italian also held his hands up over last season’s run-in, admitting he had mishandled the youngster during a fraught spell in which Spurs only just escaped relegation.

Those comments mattered. They framed Bergvall not as an outcast, but as a central figure whose development had been mishandled and needed a reset.

Now comes the reset.

Speaking after the new deal was confirmed, De Zerbi underlined just how highly he rates the midfielder. “I believe his best football is still ahead of him and we want to give Lucas the platform to reach his full potential,” he said.

For Tottenham, that platform has to be more than words. A player once ready to walk away has committed his future. The next step is simple, and far more brutal: he needs the ball, the minutes and the responsibility to match the ambition both sides have just put in writing.
