Liverpool Target Djed Spence Amid Defensive Concerns

Liverpool’s summer has been strangely quiet. Two signings, one of them – Jeremy Jacquet – effectively wrapped up months ago, and a growing sense that the squad still needs surgery in key areas. Now, attention is turning towards a solution from an unlikely source: Tottenham’s Djed Spence.

The 25-year-old, whose versatility across the back line has long appealed to recruitment departments, has emerged as a serious option for Anfield. According to Anfield Sector, Liverpool “have an interest” in the defender, and crucially, Spence is described as “extremely receptive” to the idea of making the move north.

This is not a one-sided flirtation. Those close to Tottenham’s dealings suggest the club would be prepared to cash in – at a price. Spurs are expected to demand at least £35m for Spence, a figure shared by X account @szyexcl, a channel that has built a reputation among Tottenham followers for being close to the club’s thinking.

For Liverpool, the interest in Spence comes at a time when the back line looks worryingly thin. Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni are both set to miss the start of the new season through injury. Joe Gomez has already suffered a muscle problem in pre-season. The alarm bells have been ringing loudly enough for new head coach Andoni Iraola to formally request that FSG bring in defensive reinforcements, a stance reported in late July.

Spence fits the profile. An ultra-versatile full-back, he offers cover on the right and flexibility across the defensive unit, the kind of adaptability modern managers prize when the fixture list tightens and injuries bite. AnfieldIndex had previously flagged him as a player Liverpool admired; the latest reports suggest that admiration has hardened into something more concrete.

The context at Tottenham adds another layer. Spurs have been aggressive in the market, with six signings already through the door and more planned, particularly in the final third. Savinho is the headline target for the right wing, and the club also want either a left winger or a striker. Cody Gakpo has surfaced as a potential option for that attacking rebuild, with Spurs monitoring the Liverpool forward and the Reds open to a sale if they can secure a direct replacement.

While Liverpool push ahead with their pursuit of Bradley Barcola and also explore a move for his PSG teammate Ibrahim Mbaye, the need at the back feels more urgent. Iraola’s concerns over his current right-back options have been laid bare, and Spence’s willingness to join only sharpens the focus.

There is, however, no suggestion yet that Spence is the only defensive name on Liverpool’s list. Anfield Sector stress that he is not the sole option under consideration, and that there is “no clarity” on whether talks will move forward. The interest is “definite”, even if it is being downplayed publicly.

Tottenham, for their part, would view a £35m-plus sale as useful fuel for their own reshaping under Ange Postecoglou. Offloading a player who has struggled to nail down a long-term starting role, while reinvesting in key attacking areas, fits the broader pattern of their window.

So the stage is set. A Liverpool side light on defensive depth. A manager pushing for reinforcements. A versatile full-back eager for the move. And a selling club ready to deal at the right price.
