Liverpool Set to Secure Contract for Untouchable Rio Ngumoha

Liverpool are closing in on what they see as one of the most important pieces of business of their summer – tying Rio Ngumoha to a new, improved contract.

The 18-year-old winger emerged as one of the few bright sparks in a flat Liverpool campaign last season, his fearless cameos and direct running cutting through some of the gloom at Anfield. While senior forwards misfired, Ngumoha often looked like the one player capable of igniting a game, and many around the club felt he had earned more minutes at the expense of the struggling Cody Gakpo.

That impact drew attention. Serious attention.

Bayern Munich tested the waters earlier in the window, sounding out a possible move that would have stunned Liverpool’s hierarchy. The German champions ultimately backed away and turned to alternative wide options, but the message inside Anfield was already clear: Ngumoha was not for sale.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano underlined that stance this week, describing Ngumoha as “untouchable” in Liverpool’s plans.

“Two wingers – because Liverpool’s intention is to add two wingers to the squad, especially if Gakpo goes to Tottenham – in any case, Rio Ngumoha is untouchable,” Romano said, stressing that at no point this summer was the youngster close to joining Bayern. For Liverpool, he added, Ngumoha is an “absolutely crucial” part of both the present and the future.

Liverpool ready to reward rapid rise

Now, as reported by TEAMtalk, Liverpool are said to “fully expect” to reach an agreement with Ngumoha over a new deal and are moving to finalise terms.

The club had already pushed the limits for him once, handing the teenager the maximum three-year contract permitted when he first arrived. That framework is no longer enough. His performances have outgrown it.

According to the report, Liverpool are preparing a significantly upgraded contract that reflects his rapid rise. The package would include a substantial pay increase, with further performance-related uplifts built in, including bonuses linked to international appearances. The structure underlines how firmly Liverpool believe Ngumoha will establish himself at senior level in the coming seasons.

Crucially for the club, there is said to be no lingering fear of him being tempted away in the short term. After a summer of speculation, Liverpool now feel they have ridden out the Bayern noise and reasserted their position around one of the Premier League’s most highly regarded young talents.

Gakpo pushes for Spurs move

While one winger edges closer to committing his future, another is looking for the exit.

A separate TEAMtalk report claims Gakpo has informed Liverpool that he wants to join Tottenham Hotspur. The Dutch forward, who has struggled to consistently convince since his arrival at Anfield, is now pushing for a fresh start in north London.

The piece states that Gakpo’s representatives have already agreed personal terms in principle with Spurs. They have since escalated the situation by speaking directly to Liverpool’s hierarchy, making the player’s stance explicit: he does not see his long-term future at Anfield and wants the opportunity to move to Tottenham.

That potential departure dovetails with Liverpool’s wider transfer plan. The club are targeting two wingers, a strategy that would make far more sense if Gakpo heads out. It also casts Ngumoha’s renewal in an even sharper light. With one forward agitating to leave and the market for wide players increasingly aggressive, Liverpool cannot afford to lose the one attacker they now consider non-negotiable.

If they get Ngumoha’s signature on that new deal while cashing in on Gakpo at the right price, Liverpool’s front line will look very different – younger, hungrier, and built around a teenager they are determined not to let slip away.
