Liverpool Reject Bayern's Pursuit of Rio Ngumoha
Liverpool shut the door on Bayern as Rio Ngumoha declared ‘untouchable’.
Bayern Munich thought they had found a hidden gem. Liverpool have made it clear they are going nowhere near the negotiating table.
On Friday, a flurry of reports from England and Germany pulled back the curtain on a transfer pursuit that had been running quietly in the background for weeks: Bayern’s move for 17-year-old Liverpool winger Rio Ngumoha.
The story first broke when David Ornstein revealed that Bayern were exploring a deal for the teenager, identifying him as a primary target for the left flank. Ornstein reported that Ngumoha was aware of the German champions’ interest, but that Liverpool’s message was blunt – not for sale, and no appetite to weaken an attack they intend to reinforce.
The plot thickened in Germany. Sky journalist Florian Plettenberg detailed how far Bayern had already gone. According to his reporting, the club had reached a full verbal agreement with Ngumoha and his camp on 26 May, with Vincent Kompany personally approving the move after talks with the player. Bayern saw Ngumoha as an “absolute priority” as back-up to Luis Díaz on the left, alongside their pursuit of Anthony Gordon.
Then it all fell apart. Plettenberg stated that “the deal collapsed” on Thursday, at least for now, with Bayern’s attention potentially shifting towards other targets such as Brown and Saibari if they can strike club-to-club agreements.
The reason for the collapse emerged soon enough.
Fabrizio Romano moved to clarify Liverpool’s stance, and it could hardly be firmer. Posting on Wednesday evening, he described Ngumoha as “untouchable”, stressing that this has been the club’s internal position for months. Liverpool, he reported, see the teenager as a crucial part of their long-term project and have ruled out any chance of a summer exit to Bayern.
For Fenway Sports Group and the Liverpool hierarchy, this is a line in the sand. In an era when elite clubs routinely circle around emerging Premier League talent, they have chosen to ringfence a 17-year-old who has yet to become a household name but is already regarded as one of the most gifted young players in the division.
Bayern came calling, armed with a plan, a manager’s approval and a verbal agreement with the player’s camp. Liverpool’s answer was simple: no sale, no discussion, no weakening of the future they believe they are building around Rio Ngumoha.
