Liverpool's Alisson to Stay Amid Defensive Shake-Up After Konaté's Departure

Liverpool’s summer of upheaval has found its limit. One more leader out the door, and the whole thing starts to creak. So the club have made a call: Alisson Becker is staying.

With Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson both walking away on free transfers, and Ibrahima Konaté now confirmed to be leaving after contract talks collapsed, Liverpool have decided they cannot afford to lose another pillar of the dressing room in the same window.

Konaté walks, talks collapse

Konaté’s departure, confirmed late on Thursday, is being viewed inside the club as a blow they tried hard to avoid. Negotiations over a new deal began in November 2023 and dragged on for months. They never got close enough.

As reported by Ben Jacobs, there was a “significant gulf” between the club and the 27‑year‑old over terms. Liverpool were willing to pay big wages, but only within what they regard as a carefully managed internal structure. They refused to tear that up for one renewal, even for a first-choice centre-back.

In the end, they chose to walk away from what was seen as an overly expensive extension. The money earmarked for Konaté’s new deal will now be redirected into two major priorities: replacing Salah and strengthening other key areas of the squad.

Konaté will not be short of options. The Daily Mail report PSG as his most likely destination, with Chelsea, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid also hovering in the background.

Too many leaders gone – Alisson off the market

That exit comes on top of Robertson and Salah leaving for nothing. Three senior figures, three big personalities, gone in one swing. At that point, Liverpool drew a hard line.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have “formally told” Alisson they want him to stay and continue at the club next season. The plan, settled last week and now communicated directly to the Brazilian, is simple: no more experienced core players will be allowed to leave.

Alisson had already explored the possibility of a move. He reached a verbal agreement on personal terms with Juventus back in April, attracted by a three-year offer at a time when he has only 12 months left on his Liverpool contract.

The door looked open. Then the club shut it.

The relationship between Alisson and Liverpool remains strong, and that has shaped the outcome. He was not prepared to force his way out if the club decided they needed him to stay. They have done exactly that. The expectation now is that he will see out the final year of his deal at Anfield.

Juventus lose their target. Liverpool keep their goalkeeper, their organiser, their security blanket.

Centre-back plans reset

Konaté’s exit, though, leaves a clear hole in the heart of Liverpool’s defence.

As it stands, the centre-back options are Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni. On paper, that’s four names. In reality, it’s one veteran leader, one versatile defender who has spent years covering multiple roles, and two youngsters still learning the demands of top-level football after long-term injuries.

Liverpool know that isn’t enough for a season that will again demand a deep squad across multiple competitions. Club sources indicate they will move back into the market for another centre-back.

Early names are already surfacing. Juventus defender Gleison Bremer has been linked, as has former Liverpool centre-back Jarell Quansah. Both would bring different profiles: Bremer the established Serie A presence, Quansah the familiar face with Premier League experience and room to grow.

The club also hold “high hopes” for Jacquet and Leoni heading into next season, but they are not about to gamble the entire defensive structure on potential alone. A fifth centre-back is on the agenda.

A squad at a crossroads

Liverpool’s summer rebuild was always going to be significant. Salah, Robertson and Konaté leaving in quick succession has turned it into a high-wire act.

By ringfencing Alisson, the club have chosen their hill to defend. They will lose goals, assists and a starting centre-back. They will not, by choice, lose their goalkeeper and one of the dressing room’s most authoritative voices.

Now the question is simple: can they rebuild the spine quickly enough to stay at the sharp end, or will this be remembered as the summer when too much changed at once?
