Lewis Hall's England Snub Opens Door for Manchester United
Manchester United sense opportunity. Lewis Hall’s frustration with his England snub has opened the door, and Old Trafford is moving towards it.
Hall’s England disappointment, United’s opening
Hall has been left out of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup, a decision that has not gone down well with the 21-year-old. The Sun report that he is “frustrated” after a season in which he was regularly shifted out of position by Eddie Howe at Newcastle.
He finished the campaign filling in at right-back, covering for the injured Tino Livramento. In the penultimate game before Tuchel named his 26-man squad – a 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest – Hall started on the right side of defence and was taken off at half-time in April’s 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth. He then watched the next two matches, against Arsenal and Brighton, largely from the bench.
Hall is said to feel that this combination – being played away from his natural left-back role and losing his starting place at a crucial time – damaged his chances with England. Livramento, the man he was covering for, made Tuchel’s squad. Djed Spence has travelled as cover for starting left-back Nico O’Reilly, despite being right-footed. Hall has stayed at home.
For Manchester United, the timing is significant.
United turn to their “preferred target”
TEAMtalk revealed on June 9 that Newcastle value Hall at around £60million, with United firmly in the race. The left-back is understood to be keen on a move to Old Trafford, seeing it as a major step in his development and a route back into the Champions League after tasting it this season with Newcastle.
United had been in talks over Nathaniel Brown, but with the Germany international heading to Bayern Munich, the focus has shifted. Hall is now described as their “preferred target”, with the same outlet reporting that the club are “preparing to intensify their pursuit” of the defender.
Inside Old Trafford, there is said to be “growing belief” that Hall would be open to the move. Club sources are reported to be confident that the 21-year-old wants to join, and plans are already being drawn up for a concerted push in the coming weeks.
A talented, attack-minded left-back, disillusioned by his international situation, available at a defined price and receptive to the idea of United. It is exactly the kind of market opening elite clubs wait for.
Newcastle insist: no rift with Howe
One line has been firmly shut down on Tyneside. Newcastle are adamant there has been no falling out between Hall and Howe over his usage or his England disappointment.
The Telegraph’s Northern Football correspondent Luke Edwards backed that stance, writing on X that “there has been no falling out between Eddie Howe and Lewis Hall”. He added that Hall is “extremely grateful” for the work done with him at Newcastle, which helped turn him into an England international.
Edwards also pointed out a key detail: Hall and Howe share the same agent. If Hall genuinely wanted to force a move away, Newcastle would already know about it.
So there is no open war, no dressing-room bust-up, no frozen-out full-back. Just a young defender, unhappy at missing a World Cup, aware of his value, and now firmly on Manchester United’s radar.
Newcastle have their price. United have their target. Hall has a decision to make.
