Leeds United Sign Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach

Leeds United have landed experienced Swiss defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach in a deal worth up to £8.5m, handing Daniel Farke a trusted lieutenant at the heart of his back line.

The 29-year-old has signed a three-year contract at Elland Road and walks into a dressing room already familiar with the man in charge. Farke coached Elvedi during his spell in charge of Monchengladbach in the 2022-23 season, and that relationship proved decisive.

"He is also a big point for this change," Elvedi admitted when asked about Farke’s influence. It was only a single season together in Germany, but it clearly left a mark. "It was just one year but I loved to have him as a manager. I learned a lot from him and I will learn a lot now."

Leeds agreed an initial fee of £6.8m with Monchengladbach, with a further £1.7m to follow in add-ons. For that price they are getting a defender who has been a constant presence at the top level for more than a decade.

Elvedi spent 11 years at Monchengladbach, racking up 364 appearances and growing into one of the Bundesliga club’s most reliable figures. On the international stage, he has become a cornerstone for Switzerland, earning 73 caps and playing every minute of their recent run to the World Cup quarter-finals.

For Leeds, this is not just another body through the door. Elvedi becomes their fourth signing of the summer window, joining James Trafford, Harry Wilson and fellow defender Tarik Muharemovic, as Farke quietly rebuilds the spine of his squad.

His arrival has already triggered movement. Sebastiaan Bornauw has left Elland Road to join Hamburg on a season-long loan, a clear sign that Elvedi is expected to step straight into a prominent role.

There was more change in attack too. Earlier on Wednesday, striker Joel Piroe completed a season-long loan move to West Ham, underlining that this is a Leeds squad in motion.

Elvedi, though, is the statement at the back: a seasoned international, reunited with a coach he trusts, walking into a club that expects his experience to anchor their next push.
