Juventus Pursues Zirkzee and Kolo Muani for Attacking Rebuild

Joshua Zirkzee has given the green light. Now it is over to Juventus to turn approval into signatures.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Manchester United forward has agreed in principle to a move to Turin this summer, with Juventus pushing to secure a loan deal for the Dutch international. Talks with his agent, Kia Joorabchian, are described as intense, and with good reason: Zirkzee is only one half of an ambitious attacking rebuild.

At the same time, the Juventus hierarchy is driving hard for Paris Saint-Germain striker Randal Kolo Muani, identified as the other pillar of a revamped frontline. Two deals, one clear objective: inject pace, technique and unpredictability into a side that too often looked blunt.

Massara’s long chase

Zirkzee has not arrived on Juventus’ radar by chance. New football director Ricky Massara has admired him for some time and previously tried to take him to Roma in the winter window. That move never materialised. The interest never cooled.

His numbers at Bologna in 2023-24 explain why. Twelve goals and seven assists in Serie A underlined a forward with craft between the lines and a calm edge in front of goal. That form earned him the Premier League move, but England has not been as kind. Across the past two seasons he has managed only 19 league starts from 68 appearances, struggling to secure a permanent place in the XI.

Juventus, though, are looking at the player he was in Italy and the player they believe he can be again. A modern, technically gifted forward who links play, drifts into pockets and can operate as a reference point or a roaming creator. On paper, he fits neatly into Luciano Spalletti’s positional play and fluid attacking structure.

Urgency after Ekhator blow

This is not a leisurely market exploration. It is a reaction to a problem.

The injury to young Italian striker Jeff Ekhator has stripped Juve of depth and forced the club into an aggressive stance in the window. They need bodies, but more than that, they need the right profiles. According to Gazzetta, CEO Giovanni Carnevali is simultaneously working on the Zirkzee loan with United and a €40 million agreement with PSG for Kolo Muani.

The vision is clear. Zirkzee’s technique and link-up play as the cerebral hub; Kolo Muani’s direct running and speed stretching defences and attacking space. Juventus believe that blend can transform an attack that has lacked both imagination and thrust.

If they pull it off, Spalletti would gain a very different set of tools. A forward line capable of playing to feet or in behind, of pressing high or dropping into a compact block and breaking at speed.

Spalletti waits, clock ticks

For now, Spalletti waits. The coach has made no secret, internally, of his desire to have key signings in place as early as possible. The board know the stakes. The closer it gets to August without deals completed, the less time there is to integrate new arrivals into the tactical framework.

Juventus want their core squad defined before pre-season rhythms harden. Training sessions in July are where automatisms are built, where a forward like Zirkzee learns the triggers for pressing and Kolo Muani times his runs in behind off midfielders he barely knows yet.

There is also the fixture list to consider. Juventus open their Serie A campaign away to newly-promoted Frosinone on August 23. On paper, it is a kind start. In reality, it is a potential trap for a side still learning each other’s movements and still absorbing Spalletti’s demands.

By then, the club hope, Zirkzee will be back on familiar Italian soil, Kolo Muani will be installed as the spearhead, and Spalletti will have an attack that finally looks like his.

The question now is simple: can Juventus move quickly enough in the market to match the urgency of their ambitions on the pitch?
