Juventus Sign Guglielmo Vicario on Loan from Tottenham

Juventus have turned their search for a new No 1 towards north London, striking a deal with Tottenham for Guglielmo Vicario after walking away from Emiliano Martínez.

The Italian club have agreed an initial loan for Vicario with an option to buy next year for £8.6m, a sharp drop from the £17.2m Spurs paid for him in 2023. It underlines how quickly his status has shifted. Once the clear first choice, he has now lost his place under Roberto De Zerbi to Antonin Kinsky.

Juventus change course after Martínez setback

For weeks, Juventus had circled Martínez. Aston Villa’s move for Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, worth around £30m, appeared to open the door for the Argentina international to leave. Juventus tested that theory with a €10m bid over the weekend.

Villa said no. Juventus moved on.

With Martínez currently out with a finger injury and Villa under no pressure to sell, the Italian side pivoted to Vicario, whose situation at Spurs had become increasingly fragile.

Vicario’s Spurs spell winds down

Vicario arrived at Tottenham in 2023 as the long-term solution in goal and quickly racked up close to 120 appearances. He looked embedded, safe, central to the project.

Then came change. De Zerbi, never shy of bold calls, promoted Kinsky to his No 1 role and brought in Martin Dubravka on a free to provide depth. Suddenly, Vicario was squeezed. The Juventus offer gave Spurs a clean exit route and the 29-year-old a way back to a leading role at a major club.

His departure continues a busy summer of exits. Cristian Romero, Djed Spence, Will Lankshear and Yves Bissouma have already gone. Pape Matar Sarr could follow, with Everton and Nottingham Forest both interested and the Senegal midfielder valued at £30m.

Spurs keep spending – and eye more firepower

All this movement is happening against the backdrop of a heavy Tottenham outlay. The club have already pushed past £200m on six new signings in this window, reshaping De Zerbi’s squad at speed.

The rebuild is not finished. Spurs are keen on Savinho from Manchester City, with the Brazil forward left out of Enzo Maresca’s squad for the Community Shield defeat to Arsenal in Cardiff and understood to be open to a switch. Cody Gakpo also remains on their radar as De Zerbi looks to sharpen his attack.

Vicario, then, becomes both a casualty of that overhaul and a key piece of Juventus’ own reset. The only question now is whether this loan becomes the next permanent chapter of his career in Turin.
