James Garner and Morgan Gibbs-White Earn England Recall for UEFA Nations League

James Garner has been handed an England recall for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures, rewarded for his driving role in Everton’s unbeaten start to the season.

The midfielder, who made his senior debut in a friendly against Uruguay before a second cap against Japan in March, returns to the squad after a spate of withdrawals. Declan Rice, Kobbie Mainoo and Cole Palmer have all pulled out through injury, opening the door for the 25-year-old.

Garner hasn’t just slipped back into the picture. He has forced his way in. He has started four of Everton’s five Premier League games and sits joint-second in the Toffees’ ranks for tackles per match, while also placing fourth for interceptions. Gibbs-White back in from the cold

There is another familiar name back in the England fold. Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White has also been recalled after an eye-catching start to the campaign.

The 26-year-old has produced one goal and two assists in five Premier League outings, but the numbers behind those headline contributions are just as striking. No player in the division has created more big chances so far, and only two have registered more key passes per game.

He was left out of the 2026 World Cup squad despite strong club form last season, a decision that stung. Now he returns with a point to prove and a clear chance to convince Tuchel he belongs in England’s plans beyond this window.

Nations League test looms

England’s squad will assemble on Tuesday to begin preparations for a demanding Nations League schedule: back-to-back meetings with Czechia, followed by clashes with Spain and Croatia.
