IUP and Clarion Battle to a 2-2 Draw in Intense Match

INDIANA, Pa. – IUP threw everything at Clarion. The scoreboard never quite caught up.

Kat Morgan struck twice, including a second-half equalizer, as the Crimson Hawks dominated territory and chances but had to settle for a 2-2 draw Saturday afternoon at South Campus Field.

Morgan sets the tone, Clarion hits back

IUP came out sharp and on the front foot. The breakthrough arrived early: in the ninth minute, Morgan finished off a move started by Melody Leiva, who slipped in the assist to hand the Crimson Hawks a 1-0 lead and early control.

That cushion didn’t last long.

Clarion answered six minutes later. In the 15th minute, Leah Deal pounced to level the match at 1-1, punishing one of the Golden Eagles’ rare forays forward.

The visitors then flipped the script completely. On the half-hour mark, Sofia Barba found the net, giving Clarion a 2-1 lead despite spending most of the half under pressure. IUP went into the locker room trailing, wondering how they were behind in a game they largely dictated.

One-way traffic after the break

The second half turned into a siege.

IUP outshot Clarion 8-0 over the final 45 minutes and finished the day with a 14-3 advantage in attempts, including nine on target. Every corner kick in the match – six of them – belonged to the Crimson Hawks. The Golden Eagles sat deep, absorbed wave after wave, and trusted their goalkeeper.

The pressure finally told in the 74th minute.

Morgan, dangerous all afternoon, delivered again, slotting home her second goal of the day to drag IUP level at 2-2. She made the most of her opportunities: four shots, all on frame, two in the back of the net.

IUP kept coming, but Clarion held on.

Sherk stands tall as IUP pushes

Clarion goalkeeper Sage Sherk was central to that resistance. She finished with seven saves, repeatedly denying a Crimson Hawks attack that refused to let up.

Leiva backed up her early assist with three shots. Ayla Cook and Charlotte De Keukelaere each fired off two attempts, while Zoe Ans-Bitchoka and Avery Clanton also tested Sherk as IUP swarmed the Clarion penalty area.

At the other end, junior goalkeeper Sarah Gatz went the distance for IUP, playing all 90 minutes. Clarion managed just two shots on goal – and converted both.

Numbers say IUP, result says level

The draw moves IUP to 1-2-3 overall and 1-2-2 in PSAC play, a record that hardly reflects the control they showed in this one. Clarion, efficient and resilient, improves to 3-1-2 overall and 2-1-2 in the conference.

On a day when the Crimson Hawks owned the ball, the chances, and the corners, they walked away with only a point. If they turn this kind of pressure into wins, how quickly could their season tilt in a very different direction?
