Inter Milan Secures £30m Deal for Djed Spence

Inter Milan have reached an agreement with Tottenham to sign England defender Djed Spence in a deal worth £30m. The package includes a 10 per cent sell-on clause, giving Spurs a slice of any future profit if Inter move him on.

Spence had already been granted permission to travel to Italy for a medical while talks were being finalised. Those negotiations are now complete, with the clubs settling on the £30m total and clearing the way for the full-back to join the Serie A giants.

Inter find their right flank solution

Inter have been scouring the market for a new right wing-back and had initially pushed to land Al Ittihad’s Moussa Diaby. That pursuit stalled. The search moved on. Spence quickly became the preferred option.

The 24-year-old arrives off the back of a standout summer with England, helping his country secure third place at the World Cup and showcasing the kind of aggressive, front-foot defending and surging runs that fit neatly into Inter’s system.

For Tottenham, the move is as much about squad balance as it is about profit. Pedro Porro is firmly established as first-choice right-back, while on the left Destiny Udogie, Andy Robertson, Souza and Ben Davies all offer options. Spence, despite his World Cup form, was staring at another season on the fringes.

From Boro bet to big-money sale

Spurs signed Spence from Middlesbrough in July 2022 in a deal worth up to £20m, with chairman Daniel Levy driving the move. The club initially paid £12.5m and could now more than double that outlay with this sale to Inter.

It still leaves a bittersweet taste for some Spurs supporters. They saw flashes of his talent, but never a sustained run in the side.

Sky Sports News reporter Mark McAdam summed up that mixed feeling, noting that while Tottenham are banking more than twice the fee they originally paid, it “doesn't feel like a lot of money for a player who could be so key for us”.

Spence had three years left on his Spurs contract, with an option for a further year, yet his mind has been leaning towards Italy for some time. His six-month loan at Genoa from January 2024 left a strong impression, and he is understood to be keen on returning to Serie A with a club competing at the very top.

Spurs move on – and move quickly

Tottenham have not been caught cold by Inter’s move. The club have been braced for serious interest in Spence and, as McAdam revealed, already have “irons in the fire” as they line up potential replacements on the flanks.

For Inter, this is a decisive step in reshaping their right side. For Spence, it is another chance to prove that those World Cup performances were not just flashes, but the start of a career that belongs on the biggest stages.
