Inter Milan's Dominance Over Cagliari: A Statistical Overview
The numbers are brutal. Inter are unbeaten in their last 13 Serie A meetings with Cagliari, and the Sardinians haven’t kept a clean sheet against the Nerazzurri in 20 straight clashes. History leans heavily one way – and the odds do too.
Inter’s fast starts set the tone
Inter needed just six minutes to crack Monza on opening weekend. Andy Diouf burst into space, picked out Hakan Çalhanoğlu, and the Turk lashed a right-footed finish into the roof of the net at San Siro. One chance, one statement.
That early punch wasn’t a one-off. Inter have scored first in each of their last nine league meetings with Cagliari, and they’ve gone in ahead at half-time in six of the last eight. This is a team that likes to grab a game by the throat.
There is a caveat. The most recent clash between the sides – a 3-0 Inter win at San Siro – was goalless at the break before Marcus Thuram, Nicolò Barella and Piotr Zieliński settled it in the second half. Fabio Pisacane’s Cagliari can dig in and frustrate.
Even so, Inter’s habit of flying out of the blocks makes the half-time/full-time angle hard to ignore. Backing Inter to lead at the interval and win the match is priced at 11/10 with Sky Bet, an implied probability of 47.62% that reflects their dominance in this fixture.

Sardinian shutouts: Inter’s defensive streak
Inter don’t just beat Cagliari. They shut them down.
The champions have won their last three visits to Sardinia without conceding. In August 2023, Denzel Dumfries and Lautaro Martínez delivered a routine 2-0 success. In December 2024, Inter ran out 3-0 winners. Last September, Lautaro and Francesco Pio Esposito struck in another 2-0 victory.
The pattern is clear: Inter travel here, control the game, and keep Cagliari at arm’s length. The most recent meeting underlined that gulf – Cagliari managed only six shots and failed to hit the target once.
Cristian Chivu’s back three of Yann Bisseck, Manuel Akanji and Alessandro Bastoni kept Monza quiet in the 4-1 win, offering more evidence that this defence can lock in when required. There is a warning sign, though. Cagliari struck the woodwork twice in their 1-0 win at Parma and carried a real threat from distance.
Even with that in mind, Inter to win and keep Cagliari off the scoresheet again appeals at 23/20 with Sky Bet, an implied probability of 46.51%.

Esposito’s moment: backing a breakthrough star
Francesco Pio Esposito is no longer just a promising name on a teamsheet. He’s playing like a man who belongs.
The 21-year-old opened his account for the new campaign against Monza with a deft backheel from another Diouf delivery, the kind of finish that hints at a striker full of confidence rather than a youngster feeling his way in.
He already knows what it’s like to score at the Unipol Domus. Last season, he arrived at the near post to turn in a low cross from Federico Dimarco, claiming his first ever Serie A goal on this very pitch.
Chivu trusted him from the start alongside Lautaro Martínez at San Siro, leaving Thuram and Yannick Bonny on the bench. That selection said plenty about where Esposito stands in the pecking order – and how many minutes he’s likely to get.
With his form, his history in this stadium and his growing role in the side, Esposito to score at any time at 11/10 (47.62% implied probability) looks a logical play.

Form guide: champions cruising, Cagliari confident
Cagliari arrive with belief of their own. Pisacane’s men opened with a gritty 1-0 victory at Parma, settled by summer signing Alessandro Romano. The midfielder, brought in from Roma, unleashed a left-footed strike from 25 metres that flew in and lit up an impressive away performance.
The Sardinians hit the post twice and controlled large spells, while Parma laboured in attack. The win came in difficult circumstances too. Yael Trepy remains in hospital after a swimming pool accident and, although he has left intensive care, he will miss the Inter clash. Agustin Albarracín is also unavailable, but there are no suspensions.
There is at least one new face on the training pitch. Alieu Fadera joined the group for the first time this week, adding another option out wide as Cagliari look to stretch the champions on the counter.
Inter, though, look ominously sharp. Their 4-1 dismantling of Monza was the kind of performance title holders are expected to deliver. Çalhanoğlu, Zieliński, Pio Esposito and Bisseck all scored, cancelling out Gustavo Varela’s equaliser and reasserting their authority.
Chivu has the luxury every coach craves: a fully fit squad and no suspensions. John Stones made his debut off the bench against Monza, adding experience and composure at the back. Curtis Jones and Djed Spence were not yet ready to feature, with Spence still playing catch-up after a late start to pre-season.
Predicted XIs and scoreline
Probable lineups
- Cagliari (expected): Caprile; Zé Pedro, Deiola, Rodríguez, Obert; Adopo, Winks, Romano; Fazzini, Maldini, Mendy
- Inter Milan (expected): J. Martínez; Bisseck, Akanji, Bastoni; Diouf, Barella, Çalhanoğlu, Zieliński, Dimarco; Lautaro Martínez, Pio Esposito
The trend, the talent and the momentum all lean the same way. Inter’s recent visits to Sardinia have been one-way traffic, and there’s little in the current form to suggest a radical shift.
Score prediction: Cagliari 0-2 Inter Milan
Goalscorers prediction: Inter Milan – Esposito, Çalhanoğlu
If Inter walk away with another controlled win and another clean sheet, the real question will be who can actually slow them down in this title defence.
