Hugo Ekitike's Road to Recovery from Achilles Injury
Hugo Ekitike has offered a fresh glimpse into his long road back from a ruptured Achilles, as Liverpool continue to wait on the return of one of their most explosive forwards.
The 24-year-old has been out since April, when his debut season at Anfield was abruptly cut short. It was cruel timing. Signed from Eintracht Frankfurt 12 months ago in a deal worth up to £79million, Ekitike had settled quickly and hit 17 goals before injury stopped him cold.
Now the France international is deep in the grind of rehabilitation.
Clairefontaine graft
Ekitike has been working at the Centre Medical de Clairefontaine, the renowned facility used by France’s men’s and women’s national teams. The centre posted a series of photos of the striker putting in the work as he continues his recovery.
The post read: “At Clairefontaine, there is the Chateau for national team call-ups... and the Medical Centre for their rehabilitation. Thank you to our Bleus* and Bleues for their trust.”
Ekitike liked the post and shared it on his Instagram story, a small but clear signal that he is stepping up his preparations and edging along the pathway back towards first-team football.
Liverpool have already confirmed that the forward underwent successful surgery, and the focus since has been on building strength and conditioning for the damaged Achilles. The process is long. The sessions are repetitive. But the images from Clairefontaine show a player fully engaged in the battle to return.
Iraola’s stark timeline
Andoni Iraola has not sugar-coated the situation. The Liverpool manager last spoke in detail about Ekitike’s status during pre-season and made it clear that patience will be required.
“In terms of order, I think the closest one to returning is [Giovanni] Leoni,” Iraola said in July. “After will be Conor [Bradley] and Hugo [Ekitike], but especially the last two are still way off.
“We are talking about months and still a lot of time out.”
The message was blunt: Ekitike is not close. Liverpool will have to navigate a significant chunk of the campaign without him.
Injury list mounting
Ekitike is not alone in the treatment room. Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley are also long-term absentees, leaving Iraola without three players who were expected to play meaningful roles this season.
Leoni has been sidelined since suffering an ACL injury on his debut last September. Bradley picked up a knee injury in January and has been working his way back ever since. All three are on different schedules, but none are imminent solutions.
For Ekitike, the next step is simple but demanding: more days like those at Clairefontaine, more strength built, more trust regained in the repaired tendon. Liverpool will hope that when he does finally pull that red shirt back on, the months of frustration will fuel the kind of ruthless finishing that lit up his first year at Anfield.
