Hansi Flick Reflects on Barcelona's 5-0 Win Over FC Basel

Hansi Flick walked away from Barcelona’s latest pre-season test satisfied with the scoreline, encouraged by the attitude – and still very aware that his squad is not yet where he wants it.

A 5-0 win over FC Basel offered goals and confidence, but for the German coach it also underlined a simple truth: Barcelona are still under construction, both on the pitch and in the transfer market.

Flick keeps transfer door open

Speaking after the game to the club’s media, Flick did not hide his view on the state of the squad. Asked directly about the possibility of more reinforcements before the window closes, he was blunt.

“I think we need a few more players,” he said.

No long explanations, no attempt to downplay expectations. The message was clear: despite the positive evening against Basel, Barcelona’s business is not necessarily done.

Flick stressed that the coming days will be decisive as he and his staff weigh up what they have – and what they still lack.

“We’ll analyse this match and also the training sessions. And we’ve got a match this week, so we’ll see.”

The emphasis, though, remains firmly on the work taking place away from the cameras. Flick repeatedly highlighted the level and intensity of training as the real barometer of where his team stands heading into the new season.

“The most important thing is how we train – the quality and the intensity – and that’s very good. I can see the standard of the team and that’s what matters most.”

Basel test exposes details to fix

On the night, Barcelona put five past Basel and showed flashes of fluency, but Flick’s assessment cut through the scoreline. He liked the test. He also saw flaws.

“It was a good test for us; Basel played well. It wasn’t easy playing against them,” he reflected.

Then came the critique. Barcelona, he felt, lacked the speed and sharpness he demands, particularly before the break.

“Perhaps in the first half we didn’t play as quickly as we’d have liked, either in terms of positioning or off the ball. That’s what we need to improve on. We’ve got potential, and I’m pleased with the test.”

The performance carried enough positives to reassure him, yet enough imprecision to keep the pressure on his players in the final stretch of pre-season.

Elche already in Flick’s sights

The 5-0 scoreline did not dictate his team selection. Fitness did. With several players only just back in full training, Flick’s choices were shaped by minutes in the legs rather than names on the back of shirts.

“Some players arrived five days ago and we have to prepare for the match against Elche: we have to think about who can start, who can play the full ninety minutes, and we can only make five substitutions,” he explained.

“All of this influences how we want to manage this match.”

Karim Adeyemi’s strong display offered one more attacking option as Flick considers his first La Liga XI, but the coach’s comments made it clear that the broader puzzle – who is ready, who can last, who still needs time – is dominating his thoughts.

The countdown to the opener against Elche has started. The training ground will decide who plays it, and the transfer market may yet decide who joins them.
